Ok, so I did a Search here, and then thought (!?!) to "look it up" at Microsoft (which upon doing, realized I had done that before), to little (or no) avail - sooooo ...

In "grc123" ("SIMPLE") terms, please, can anyone tell me the likelihood that "we" might need this ("Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable") - anytime soon? It takes up 5 ("5.21") MB's of space - that could be used (or NOT) otherwise.

We're not into the 'latest/greatest video games', we're not (at this point - hah!) doing any "developing" or such ... this is my folks PC (they're in their late 60's - pretty much just email and some surfing), a six year-old Dell, w/XP, and a rather smallish (?) hard drive - "20GB".

    Thanks much in advance!

If you aren't developing programs or debugging them, I see no reason to have this product.

Sweet - thank you! Though I "would like" try to do some of those things (and hopefully in the not-too-distant future, may be able to learn a bit), the reality is ahhhhh - no, I am not doing them and it probably wouldn't much be on this PC if/when I did/do.

    Thanks again!

Hmmm (?) ... I bet there's a whole buncha' ("MS") "stuff" I could unload from this PC to free-up space - starting with "Word" (and it's 101MB's!) - especially now that I seem to be successfully using things such as "Google Doc's", huh?

If Google Docs handles all your Word document needs, then I agree Word could go.
A brief word of caution though, many people email .doc files as attachments.
If you axe Word and Google ever stops allowing you access (for whatever reason - MS might sue them? - You never know), to reinstall Word is not cheap.

I would leave alone as many developed 3rd party applications will use the basic redistributable files to allow them to run, its similar for .NET, remove these and some applications may fail to run.

On Word, while Google Docs is good, its reliant on an internet connection so if your net goes out, you have no advanced document editing, only left using Notepad! also if they use Outlook or Outlook Express for email, they will without Word loos the spellcheck ability, unless they download and install a 3rd party spellcheck util.

wow - lots to consider (as per so often it seems) ... thanks.

As I still have the original Dell & MS install disks (Back-Up - correct?) that we're provided by Dell six years ago (though the machine was delivered 'factory pre-loaded/ software pre-installed'), I should be able to re-install Word if ever I need - correct? Aside from Updates, which I could get from MS - right - or no?

    Thanks again,

PS - come to think of it, as this PC seems to have "lost" ?!?) WordPAD (which seems to me to be a pretty happy medium between Word & Notepad?), shouldn't I be able to find that on one of the original install disks? Thanks again ...
