Rip DVD to Mpg or Avi

I am looking for some free software that will allow me to rip a DVD to an MPG or AVI file.

Any suggestions?


And don't go flipping out b/c this is violating copyright laws--i own the DVD and want the file for my own use.

AutoGk is pretty good. I usually go back to it for a simple rip. If you just want a watchable movie on your computer I usually choose 700mb under the predefined size tab. Under Advanced, I prefer the XviD codec. Other than that, I think it's just entering the input file and naming the output file.

If you've never converted a DVD before, be aware you have to copy the DVD files to your HD and then use that new folder as the input for the program. You can't convert a DVD directly off the DVD disc. As hopperdave mentioned afterdawn.com or Videohelp.com have tutorials for most of the common software available.
