I have not been online with my xp for years but I hang on to it because it is necessary to run an embroidery machine I have. Neither get used anymore they just gather dust.

The fact that people have insisted on continuing to use it was astonishing to me.

I'm on it now! It just flies. Nothing I can't do in XP that I can in Win7 (I dual boot)

Not sure if you would have driver issues with other hardware on a system such as this, but it is possible to run XP on an SSD.
The main issue being XP has no Trim Support which would degrade the drives performance over time.

I would run XP inside a VM on your system Wile, plenty of resources to share there!

I don't use trim on my systems.I use defrag and it runs fine with out problems and never is slow. You're drive will degrade over time as is.Has nothing to do with HDD settings. In fact it will make my system run faster and more efficiently. With out errors on the drive.

The SSDs are far too advance for windows xp.I have tried to install xp a while back and it will give a error message.

Well I have a Samsung 850 Pro 1TB running in XP with no issues whatsoever.

I also run that same Gigabyte board with an FX6300 cpu and an MSI GTX 660. The SSD is my boot drive and I have 2x Seagate 2TB Enterprise drives that also read / write at a min of 150Mb/sec. Monitor Dell P2414H running at 1600x900 DVI

It would be correct to say that XP has no automatic Trim feature like Win7 and > o/s but Trim can be enabled manually via the Samsung Magician software for boards with Intel chipsets.

For boards with AMD chipsets, like mine, the way to get around this is to boot to bios and leave it run for 5-7 hours so that the Garbage Collection [GC] can work away. I do this every couple of months or so and have not noticed any slowdown whatsoever since I built my system about 8 months ago.

FYI, wile e coyote, the key to running an SSD on XP is to pick an SSD which has great GC and imo Samsung has the best at the price.

Intel SSD have a program which according to my searches can manually Trim SSDs in XP but their program will only work with Intel drives which are extremely expensive.

Forgot to say that USB3.0 also works extremely well in XP with sustained transfer speeds [for large files] of 120-130 Mb/s and bursts of 150+Mb/s

Well i use the kingston suv400s Mini drives that fit into a laptop. And i must say they run really well.I don't like using them big bulky drives any more due to the lack of air flow.

    To each their own.

I would agree with you that HDDs are bulkier. However myLian Li case has 2x 140mm Noctua intake fans at the front.

The lower fan is situated in front of the drive cage and my Seagates never rise above 32-33C even when I am copying enormous amounts of data so am happy with that. These 2 drives are solely for data and back up. I value redundancy.

The other huge advantage that HDDs have is that if they start to go bad, then there is usually sufficient warning and enough time to remove any data (if necessary) whereas when SSDs go bad, they will just brick.

Lastly, 2TB SSDs are still very expensive perhaps when they come down in price I might reconsider.

Getting a little off topic but yes i agree with you as well.Having HDD as back ups for just that purpose is the best idea. You don't want to start loading all the junk on to a 1tb SSD and then it be really slow.

Videos and games will slow the SSD down greatly.Reason why i have a secondary SSD just for games only.I keep the windows files on the main SSD for speed and efficiency.

Good riddance. All the folks praising XP like the second coming got ocular whiplash rolling their eyes at the folks bitterly clinging to 98.:D

Windows Xp was a great OS for a very long time.Till things be came more and more up to date and newer hardware.

Than it came down to windows 7 which is still a great OS compared to windows 10.

Why not? If you use a NIC PCI card and connect it in client bridge mode you can probably run 98 on fibre broadband.

Windows XP one of Microsoft's best OSes, yes its old as hell now but TBH past SP1 it was bombproof with good hardware, not say same with Vista, 8 ok, but 10 is good.

it has the Ethernet jack and i assume the driver is there but ive never heard of what your talking about

Check in Device Manager if driver for NIC is loaded.

To double check connect with ethernet cable and ping the gateway.

Then get yourself one of these

    https://www.amazon.co.uk/TP-Link-Su...s=nano+router&qid=1557216946&s=gateway&sr=8-3

If you want dual wifi band ie 2.4 & 5Ghz

    or

    https://www.amazon.co.uk/TP-LINK-TL...s=nano+router&qid=1557216946&s=gateway&sr=8-6

If you are happy with just 2.4Ghz

The 1st one is easier to set up and seems more stable

Connect either of those units to the ethernet port of the PCI card and create a wifi bridge (client bridge mode). Google it. Easy to do

With 98 you will / may need to play around with the RWIN values in the registry

    https://www.speedguide.net/downloads.php

I now use the dual band ones (in 5Ghz mode) for my desktop and laptops (since they only have 'g' cards) and have them connected to a Netgear

    https://www.amazon.co.uk/NETGEAR-R6...netgear+r6120&qid=1557217282&s=gateway&sr=8-2

My broadband is 40/10 and even on the laptop running XP about 45 feet away and one floor down, I get 36/9

    Good Luck
