Ripping Cds Is Painfully Slow

I'm not sure if my problem is software or hardware...........I've been ripping my cd collection using Windows Media Player, using an external USB3 cdrom to a 5 TB external drive that that came with a cable with a firewire port on the drive side and plugs into a USB3 port on the pc side. I am ripping at the best quality of 320 Kbps. But the ripping is taking longer than it would to play the CDs. I mean literally over an hour for some of my cds. I'm thinking there has to be some setting somewhere that I don't know about. I did try ripping to my C drive and then just moving the files to the external drive, but there's no real difference. Any suggestions would be appreciated......... TIA

Just an update for those who might be following............. I switched the port that the cdrom was plugged in to, to a usb3 port on the MB. The cdrom is no longer making a clicking noise and the ripping is going a little faster, but still not the speed I'm used to. I ordered a different and hopefully better cdrom which should be delivered today. I'll post an update.........

I don't know of anybody that rips to 320 Kbps, that's a lot of overkill and you won't be able to tell the quality if you ripped it lower.

    128 Kbps is usually fine

128 is the smallest size, but I think you might be right. Up until now, I've never messed with the recommended settings. It's been such a long time since I've had to do this. I guess I was just thinking it would be better........ thanks

Well my issue was resolved with the new external cdrom......... I'm happily ripping cds again in just a minute or 2............ go figure..........

It would be nice if you provided the make and model of your old cdrom and your new cdrom in case others are experiencing your problem.
