I'm always on the look out for new free AV apps, so Rising AV peaked my interest. I downloaded and installed it. The install went smoothly as expected. It does require a reboot after installing which is a minor annoyance. It also adds a logo to the top left corner of the Welcome screen which is another thing I'm not a huge fan of but I can overlook it if the app is good. After restarting I launched it, and I don't know if it was the PC or the app, but it almost immediately stopped responding. I waited about 60 seconds or so and then opened the Task Manager and saw that it was, indeed, Not Responding. So I was just going to end the process, but right before I killed it, it sprang (sprung?) back to life. So I closed the Task Manager and proceeded to poke around a bit. There's a few things they should address in this software; nothing really major... it does not auto update when it's installed. The end user must find the 'update' option; it doesn't have it's own button or tab; it's buried in the 'Security Audit' tab. Another minor annoyance is that when you mouse over some of the options that can be user-configured, they do not 'signal' the user as to this fact. What I mean is when you mouse over something, the pointer doesn't change, the item doesn't change color or become underlined or anything, so the user would kind of have to just try clicking on random stuff to see if it does anything. Anyway, so far it looks like an OK antivirus app. It needs some minor polishing and tweaking of the GUI. The main 'problem' is with it not auto updating upon installing it, or maybe it does and I just didn't wait long enough, but it never popped up a dialog saying it would update. Hopefully it will auto update after the user initiates the first one. I'm going to spend a few days running Rising Antivirus just to see what it's all about, and I'll add to this thread as needed if anyone cares.

Feel free to add your own comments and observations....
    Thanks for reading!

(why do they use a coffee cup icon for the pause button when running a virus scan? A coffee cup? :confused )

Well thanks dlb. I asked here about AR some time ago when I was looking for a different av program after being disappointed with AVG 8. I finally went with Avast! and happy with it so far. AR looks good and promising, so I'll definately keep a lookout on it.

    thanks for this,

i've been looking around for something i like that will replace avg7 (tried avg8, didn't like it),

got this running on a vm at the moment - i like the gui, smooth

didn't get the lock-up though but i did get it to run a shell extension scan automatically through my download manager

need to go hunting malware now and see what happens,

up to now its a good call

Rising AV does have an auto update feature :-D You can set it to check for updates on a schedule (daily at a certain time each day, or every 12 hours, or weekly where the user chooses a day of the week, etc). By default, the auto update feature is set to "Automatic". Now I just have to run it on a PC that's full of malware to see how it handles the detection and removal of nasties....

@ luckyvic and hawklord: thanks for your input, it's much appreciated!

If anyone else out there is checking out Rising AV, please post your thoughts, observations, and experiences with it. Or if you're looking for a free AV app, check out Rising. It looks good so far, and the more I get into it, the better it gets. The link is in my first post up top, or you can use this link to download it.

    Another couple of observations:
Rising AV (RAV) has a startup scanner similar to AVG of old. This is a cool option, but in my opinion shouldn't be enabled by default. It is easily disabled though. RAV also has a scan schduled to run daily by default. Again, it is easily disabled.

Since I started this thread, I have installed RAV on 2 other PCs and experienced none of the 'problems' I mentioned earlier, primarily the 'not responding'. The other 2 installs went perfectly smooth and upon restarting, I was offered a bunch of configuration options. This did not occur with the first install, so I'm assuming the PC is at fault for the 'not responding' thing and for the lack of configuration options. It apparently had nothing to do with RAV. :-D :clap

The more I use it, the more I like it! :celebrate

    same feeling here,

been trying to get the vm infected with only RAV on - not much luck yet:cry (maybe i'm just clicking the wrong box:-D)

only thing i could get close was winantivirus2008 and i had to allow it through, wouldn't run full blown and kept complaining,

Thanks, dlb. I will have to replace AVG 7.5 in a few days and since that particular computer already is running CounterSpy, I can't run AVG 8 on it.
I was going to install threatfire but I might just try this one instead.

OK- I just got a chance to run RAV on an infected PC to see how it does at scanning, detecting, and removing the nastiness. Unfortunately, it scans so freeekin' S L O W L Y that I can't really say how accurate it may or may not be. I started the first scan and it was taking way too long so I cancelled it and set it for a custom scan; I chose 3 folders for it to scan: Documents & Settings, Program Files, Windows. The scan started about 18 minutes ago and it has only scanned about 6000 files. If you do lots of virus scans, you'd recognize that as being very slow. Full drive scans with other similar apps take about the same amount of time, and RAV is telling me that there's over 3 hours remaining!
    :tired :zzz :tired :zzz
So, I think that RAV might be OK for protection on a PC that has just had Windows installed or is known to be 100% clean. I can't, in good conscience, recommend RAV for scanning and removal. It's way too slow.

BTW- so far, RAV has found one "virus".... it's the Adobe Updater. So it looks like false positives are going to be an issue with RAV also.

When the scan finishes (if I don't cancel it), I'll post the results for those interested....

Well, after 42 minutes the scan was only at about 35%. I cancelled it. It found only one file and that was the Adobe Updater. My earlier statement "the more I use it, the more I like it" is no longer valid. Again, RAV may be OK for protection on a PC known to be clean, but other than that, I really can't give it a thumbs up. :(

I'm done with RAV for now. If they do some work on it: address the extreme slowness, polish the GUI a bit (it looks great cosmetically but needs functional work; see my first few posts), and do something about the false positives, then it may be worth another look. But for now, I'll pass.... :(

(about 8 minutes ago I started a scan with Super Antispyware on the same PC; it has scanned about 7200 files and already found 10 infections. I knew this particular PC was infected and would be a good test for RAV; it failed)

Thanks, one out of the running. I do have superantispyware on the computer but I wanted something else also.

A few observations about Rising AV:

    [Background for comments]
I've used various freeware programs (a-squared, HJT, super anti-spyware, spyware terminator,...), but my primary AV in the past have been Norton/Symantec Corp. Ed. (didn't like, too bloaty, let viruses slip that AVG caught), followed by AVG (liked up to v7.5, but v8 was/is too bloaty with default installation settings, settings require tweaking, and worst of all I can't turn it off completely, but otherwise it's excellent been and has always caught everything). Now I'm trying Rising AV on my (newer) laptop computer. (Slower/older desktop still has AVG8, but I'm thinking of trying Rising on it too).

    2. Initial impression of Rising (~3 weeks): I like it. It's very discreet, doesn't conflict with or slow down significantly other programs (except ComboFix*). Some times notices pop up to ask me whether to allow start-up/reg changes. Speed of various scans is about same as with AVG and other programs I think, but Rising runs more discreetly. For example, I'm running a full scan now while surfing the web, and don't notice any slowdown on this computer. When I run a full AVG8 scan, everything slows down noticeably - though I may be biased since recently I've only been using it on the slower computer...

    3. Potential problems?

    a. Quality of protection: I trust AVG's protection. With Rising, I cannot say yet, except that it hasn't let anything slip as far as I know in the 3 weeks or so that I've had it installed.

    b. Freeware status: Will this continue to be freeware? I hope so, otherwise I would not bother, but who knows... I just got a pop-up saying Rising was about to expire - apparently this is a bug that the update should eliminate. Their sites promises to keep it free, but for how long?

4.* combofix: I scanned an external HD which had an old copy of MG's combofix and other anti-malware for emergencies. Rising deleted it (see attached pic) - I assume it's a false positive, but whoever is in charge of that
program over here might want to check that out.

Don't care for it and can't remove it.

Use control panel and windows remove option and it asks for a code on the internet and reboots computer before it can remove the program.
Can anyone tell me how to remove this stupid program?

    Thanks,
