Rogue Squadron 3D?! (direct x problem)

Just borrowed this game from a friend.
It wants to install direct x 6, but won't... which I think is fine anyway, since I have 8 or 9 on my pc now.
Problem is, I can't play the game! It won't let me through that point.
Any ideas?

P3, 700Mhz
20gig hd
256 ram
128 rage pro vid card

 

if I recall, it should just say " a newer version is already installed " and then exit that part.

 

Yeah, you'd think so, eh? But not this time. I've even gone so far as to try and re-install dir x 6... and it gives an instant message saying it's done installing. And then I try to play... same old same old.

 

for rogue squadron.. USE XP and set it up to run under 98..

Good Luck.. I played with this bug for over 1 day.. And Last year i gave up on it..
