I am at a loss. I have been given an infected PC that someone has attempted to clean. I followed the XP cleaning procedure.
    1. Ran SUPERAntiSpyware - it ran clean, but will not restart unless I use Inherit.exe
    2. Ran Malwarebytes Anti-Malware - it runs 2 seconds and stops
    3. Ran Combofix - it found a rootkit and had to restart, says it finds AVG and AVG has been removed from machine. Combofix will not run.
    4. Ran RootRepeal - it started but ran about 4 seconds and stopped, cannot find any type of log.
    5. HiJackThis will not run
    6. MGTools is not running right.
Logs I have been able to get:

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Your eventlog.dll file (a system file) has been replaced with an infection. Let's see if we can get some info so that we can find a replacement to restore from.

Download and save the below to your PC (save it anywhere you can find it. The Desktop is fine). Then doube click on it to run it.

    AVPFind.bat

It should take a couple minutes to run. You will see a black command prompt window while it is running and it should close when it is finished. Once it finishes, attach the c:\avplog.txt file that is will hopefully create as long as the malware does not block the batch file from running.

    Now download and Run exeHelper
    • Please download exeHelper to your desktop.
    • Double-click on exeHelper.com to run the fix.
    • A black window should pop up, press any key to close once the fix is completed.
    • Post the contents of log.txt (Will be created in the directory where you ran exeHelper.com)
Note: If the window shows a message that says "Error deleting file", please re-run the program before posting a log - and post the two logs together (they will both be in the one file).

Also please try running the below online scan:

    http://www.superantispyware.com/onlinescan.html

Reboot immediately after scanning if it finds and removes anything. Let me know if anything was found. See if you can save a log with it.

Then try running these instructions: Using MGtools

Attach the below logs when finished with all of the above:
    • C:\avplog.txt - from AVPfind
    • a log from online SAS scan if you could make one
    • log.txt - from exeHelper
    • C:\MGlogs.zip - from MGtools
The C:\ assumes that drive C is you Windows boot drive. If you boot from another drive, then use the correct drive letter above.

    Hi, chaslang,
You are a very prolific worker on this site. I thought it was all yours for a while. THANKS!! in advance for all of your help. These files were run on 10/01 in expectation of you needing them. I finally have SUPERAntiSpyware running but it does not find anything. This is both for the one installed on the infected PC and the online scan. I hope it is as simple as replacing the eventlog.dll with a clean copy. The bootup takes a very long time, is it because of running SAS?
Attached are the files you asked for: It said that I had already uploaded log.txt so I added a "1" to the new filename. I hope that this helps and I do not take too much of your time. it did not seem to upload.

I see that you ran ComboFix on Oct 1st. You did not attach that log. Please attach it. It looks like ComboFix already was able to repair the bad system file problem but we have more to do.

What programs are you using for your antivirus, antispyware and firewall? Is it Microsoft Security Essentials and if so, when did you install it?

If you did not knowingly install Ask Toolbar, I suggest that you uninstall it now.

Since you already have Win32kDiag downloaded, please do the below again.
    • Click on Start->Run, and copy-paste the following command (the bolded text) into the "Open" box, and click OK. When it's finished, there will be a log called Win32kDiag.txt on your desktop. Please attach this log
    C:\win32kdiag.exe -f -r
Run this Disable/Remove Windows Messenger to remove Windows Messenger. Do not confuse Windows Messenger with MSN Messenger because they are not the same. Windows Messenger is a frequent cause of popups.

Now download The Avenger by Swandog46, and save it to your Desktop.
    • Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
    • Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    • Do not change any check box options!!
    • Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it into the Input script here: part of the window:
    • Now click the Execute button.
    • Click Yes to the prompt to confirm you want to execute.
    • Click Yes to the Reboot now? question that will appear when Avenger finishes running.
    • Your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    • A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt and it will popup for you to view when you login after reboot.
Now run Ccleaner. Only use the Run Cleaner button. Do not run anything else on any other forms.

Now download the current version of MGtools and save it to your root folder. Overwrite your previous MGtools.exe file with this one.

Run MGtools.exe ( Note: If using Vista make sure UAC is still disabled. Also don't double click on it, use right click and select Run As Administrator )

    Then attach the below logs:
    • the new Win32kDiag log
    • C:\avenger.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Thanks for your quick reply chaslang.
I ran ComboFix twice on 10/01. I am enclosing first log since I only have limited files(4) I can upload. Ask Toolbar is showing in ControlPanel/Add/Remove Programs. cannot remove it because it cannot find AskSBar.dll. It does not show up in IE8. When I got this computer I used my limited resources to try and "fix" problems. It was running IE6 and XPSP2 and an outdated subscription to Semantec AntiVirus. I updated it to IE8, and tried to install SP3. SP3 installation failed with error code: 0xC0000156 (Status_too_many_secrets). Then I installed Microsoft Security Essentials and ran it in hopes of being able to install SP3 and getting it to overwrite bad/infected files. Installation of SP3 again failed. That is when I began following your procedures for XP removal. The pc seems to be operating correctly now, BUT it now takes 207 seconds to boot, that is almost 3½ minutes - way longer than it used to.
Once again thanks for your dedication, professionalism and assistance.

    You're welcome.

The primary reason for the PC being slow is lack of memory. Your logs show the below.
You cannot properly run even Win XP SP2 and the other software being run with so little memory. And adding SP3 will just make it worse. At a minimum, the memory needs to be doubled to 1 GB but 2 GB would be better if the money is available to do so.

There are many leftovers from an improper unintall of AVG. Let's try to fix these too. Run the below AVG Removal tool and then reboot.

    AVG Remover(32bit)

Now let's try to remove Ask Toolbar. See if the below is able to uninstall it. If not, just continue on with my other instructions anyway.

    Your Uninstaller! 2009

Now delete the old copy of ComboFix.exe from your Desktop. Then download and save the current version to your Desktop but do not run it yet. Use the below link:

    combofix.exe

Now we need to use ComboFix
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it has expired or need to be updated to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box into it:
    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below
    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Also don't double click on it, use right click and select Run As Administrator ) but do not attach log from it yet since we will be running other tools first.

Now we need to reset the permissions altered by the malware on some files.
    • Download this tool and save it to your Desktop: Inherit.exe
    • It must be in your Desktop or the below fix will not work!
Now run the C:\MGtools\FixPerm.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). While this is running, you will get several/many popups that have a title FInish and say OK. Just click the OK button each time. This is an indication that it has found a file and has attempted to fix permissions. Depending on how many files that need to be fixed, you could get only a few or many of these popups.

Now see if you can run new scans with Malwarebytes and SUPERAntiSpyware.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Now attach the below logs:
    • C:\ComboFix.txt
    • logs from Malwarebytes and SUPERAntiSpyware if they ran
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

I was unable to find C:\MGtools\FixPerm.bat. I even ran a "Files" search and it was not on the "C:" drive. There were other Fix*.bat files in the folder, but no FixPerm. Therefore, I did not run the associated file inherit.exe, so I may have some files with permission problems - none evident yet. Enclosed your 4 files requested. Malwarebytes found 1 problem and it says repaired. SUPERAntiSpyware found nothing. Once again thanks for your time. Is there anything else I need to do? What do I do if I need to get permissions for some files to run?

Yes, that's because you did not download and run the bew version of MGtools as I requested. Start from that point again and work thru to the end. Also this time update Malwarebytes before running the scan. You are more than 200 database versions out of date.

Sorry ChasLang, I did not receive any indication that I was not updated. I just did the update and start on install. When I tried updating manually I got an error (730 (0,0)). Which I found out was connectivity problem..All has been resolved. I included 3 logs. FixPerm.bat found 4 (I think) permissions. Hopefully we - especially YOU - are about to finish this up. Once again thanks for your help!!! :)

You're welcome. Your logs are clean.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we used Pocket Killbox during your cleanup, do the below
      • Run Pocket Killbox and select File, Cleanup, Delete All Backups
    3. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /u
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures in step 3 the READ ME for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
