rootkit.zeroaccess Windows 7 Updates

I used combofix to remove zeroaccess rootkit yesterday. It worked... mostly.

MalwareBytes works. CCleaner works. Boostspeed works.

Windows Update does not work.

Every month Windows Update asks me to install "Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool". And every time I install it, it says it installs successfully, but when I check for new updates, it shows that it still needs to be downloaded and installed.

• Make sure the following options are checked:
  • Internet Services
  • Windows Firewall
  • System Restore
  • Security Center
  • Windows Update
• Press "Scan".
• It will create a log (FSS.txt) in the same directory the tool is run.
• Please attach FSS.txt to your next message. (How to attach)

This log is not reporting a problem with Windows Update.
You may want to try the below:

• Now open Repair_Windows.exe
• Go to Start Repairs tab.
• Choose "Custom Mode" and press "Start".
• Create a System Restore point if prompted.
• In the Custom Mode window, select the following repair options:
  • Repair Windows Updates
• Now click the Start button.
• Be patient while the tool repairs the selected items.
• If asked to reboot the computer for the changes to take affect, make sure other tasks in the program are not still running before accepting to restart.

 

Didn't work. It installs other updates fine. It just doesn't install ""Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool".

Any other ideas?

I tried that. And I tried installing it in safe mode, too.

 

What error message do you receive when you try running the standalone installer ( windows-kb890830-v4.5.exe )?

 

I am going to move this thread to the Software forum since this does not appear to be a malware related problem.

 

I think it is Malware related because this started when I got zeroaccess rootkit. Also, CCleaner and Malware Bytes shut down in the middle. Since I ran combofix, everything works but this Windows Update.

When I run the standalone file, it extracts the file and that's it. No prompt or anything after.

Tried it all... still won't work. Although I got an error message when trying to run RootRepeal: Attempt to writer to address: 0x013c4000.

Any ideas?
