Router connection

    Hi all.

I have Comcast business modem and Belkin router. I also have 4 ethernet cables connected to router, going to various rooms at the house, and 3 or so more connected to biz modem. We have ethernet ports basically in each room.

My PC is connected directly to biz modem, for "faster connection".

I can not log into my router. I do have little router blue icon down on the task bar (Windows 7) but every time I hit "router settings" my browser lands in some router.com website.

I need to have access to router and devices networked via it, as I want to start streaming Youtube shows off my PC to Roku or Dune HD internet TV streaming box. I do not think I can accomplish this without having router access off PC.

What do I need to do to make this happen? Connections wise, as in - Ethernet cables? PC does not have WIFI.

That's your problem. Your connection needs to go through the router in order for you to access the router. You appear to be trying to access your router from the "untrusted" (Internet) side of your network. If your router allowed that, you would have a totally unsecured network! Not good.

So you need to connect to your router from the "trusted" side (your "local" network) - that is, everything on your side of the router (not the Internet side).

The little blue icon simply suggests you installed router software on your computer (something no one EVER needs to do because Windows already knows how to network just fine).

If you have run out of Ethernet ports on your router, I recommend a nice 10/100/1000 Ethernet switch. A simple device like this Netgear would work perfectly. And being a 1Gb switch, it will NOT slow down your network (your ISP provided bandwidth will still be your bottleneck).

Thought so. Thank you. Just making sure before I start re-routing cables. Actually, I had it all installed fine before and could access thr router, until Mr Nice Cableguy showed and re-routed cables as "that was the issue".

I just had the weirdest thing happen.
Plugged my PC into router - had slot available - then started unplugging cables one by one to figure, which one is running to my Roku. Couldn't find one.
Ended having ALL cables disconnected from modem. All, only coaxial and power connected. Router light went yellow, nothinf physically connecting modem to network.
    Roku kept running.

Please explain what you mean by Roku kept running. Which Roku device do you have? Mine connects via Ethernet or wireless.

    Roku 2.
Roku simply kept running after ALL cables, ethernet cables, were disconnected from modem. As in - movie was running on the screen, like as if Roku was still connected to the internet. That is physically impossible, as I had router cable disconnected from modem, all other ethernet cables disconnected from modem, and the only cables connected were power and coaxial TV cable. That done, there should be NO way for Roku to keep streaming that movie. Roku is set to cable, NOT wireless connection but anyway, modem was disconnected from router.
I know about buffering, but for 5 minutes? It just kept running, I got tired of this, and replugged everything back.

Huh? That is odd. 5 minutes of audio maybe (though I doubt that too, unless you had a drive connected to your Roku), but I agree, not a movie.

That said, as noted here, the Roku 2 connects via wireless too. That would explain how the movie kept playing.

So let's backup. What are the brands and model numbers of your modem and router?

Like I said, ALL ethernet cables were disconnected from modem.
That means, router had NO connection to internet and as such, Roku could have not possibly kept streaming movie. Also, it is NOT set up for wireless. It's hardwired.
I have Belkin600 and Comcast business hub modem. But that does not change the mystery, as Roku was physically disconnected from router or modem, whatever it is connected to. No, it does not have hard drive of any nature connected to it. Usually, it buffers for seconds, not for minutes.

Ummm, without knowing the model of your modem, no, disconnecting all Ethernet does NOT mean no connection to the Internet. Cable modems connect to the Internet via coax connection. If your cable modem has an integrated WAP (wireless access point) as many today do, your Roku could still be connecting to the Internet even though all cable connections between modem and router are disconnected.

Sadly, we still don't know the modem model number to verify its capabilities.

OR another possibility is your Roku is connecting via wireless to a different nearby wireless network.

There is no other explanation for your Roku to still be streaming - it MUST be connecting to some network. If not yours, a neighbors.

    SMCD3G
Comcast Business Gateway. Neighbors do NOT have networks close enough to catch, I know 100%. I live out in sticks.

But it's not set for wireless:

Just to be sure, you reconnected the Roku to take that picture right? Because it says it is currently connected (via Ethernet).

I simply showed what it is set for. No wireless. Hardwired. I had everything reconnected several hrs ago.

Well, I am at a loss then as to how the Roku device was still streaming after 5 minutes.

    Sorry.
