Router Firewall Question

Hello,
I just have a question I was wondering about.
I have a Cable modem and a wireless router, the wireless router has a firewall built in. The question is how does the router's firewall work and doesn't it need to update?

I have noticed a lot fewer attacks (almost none) since I got the cable and router.

Router's NAt Firewall is hardware based and provide partial protction that ca not be changed (I.e No updates).
