Hey guys, I have a question about networking:

I currently live in a dorm (actually, it's summer break right now, but I move back in august). The university, of course, has its own WAN. In order to access the network, first you have to register your computer (where it is assigned an IP) and pass a compliance test. You're allowed one MAC address and one IP per user. They also give you very specific instructions that, if you choose to use a router, the router must be installed prior to registration.

My concern is this: If i register my computer through the router, I think it will register my router's MAC address. If this is the case, I'm concerned that I will be able to access the network ONLY through the router. For instance, I wouldn't be able to connect in the library, because the system would not recognize my PC's MAC address.

So my question is two parts. First, is this concern valid? Or is there some sort of way for the network to read my PC's MAC address through a router? Second, if my concern is valid, would it be a solution to give my router and PC the same MAC address? That is to say, would my PC and my router be able to connect if they shared a MAC address?

    Hi MKorostoff,

You have a very easy problem to fix.
On your router you should have a feature called clone MAC address.
If you use it the router will pass itself to the world with your PC's MAC.
So first clone your PC's MAC on your router then register your PC on the network,
    through the router.
Then when you go to the library or wherever on that network with your
PC you will still be good.
    Bad out.

    Good thinking.

Or more simply, usually the mac address auth only applies to the wired dorm connection, i assume in the libray you would use a wireless which won't be (usually) mac address locked.
