My home PC is one my wife got for free after her workplace upgraded. It's a Win7 Lenovo.
Our internet speeds seem to be slow whether on the PC or an Xbox game. Would a DNS change help at all or is there anything else that could be done to increase speeds?
This is with Comcast cable and a Motorola Surfboard. Hopefully this is the right sub forum.

    Post a speedtest result http://www.speedtest.net/
so we can see how slow it is.
I generally get around 30Mbps with Comcast ans an old DOCSIS 2 Motorola Surfboard.

I have a new one waiting to be installed; I'm just waiting until the power goes out because it is a pain to power down the modem, router, print server and two POE adapters.

Thanks plodr, I'll post that as soon as I get home today. Where did you run that test?

Also, maybe slow wasn't the correct term. I guess sporadic might be better.

Well that is not a slow connection!
Perhaps pages seem to load slow. If that is the case, what browser is being used? Do you have any addons to block ads and all the flash content?

I'm running Adblock Plus, but the main issue I guess is with an Xbox online. It seems it takes longer for things to load than everyone else and it's really choppy quite often.
Probably their servers I assume, maybe I was just hoping for a magic bullet to improve things.

By the way, changing the DNS probably won't help since all that DNS does is resolve IPs to a name.

So, if you ping majorgeeks.com, your DNS provider will provide an IP of 74.50.120.86

That is pretty much what DNS does.

If you feel that the internet is slow, turn off all devices that use your internet access, including phones. Then try accessing the internet on one device. Faster?

I always turn off the other device (there's only one PC and an Xbox) when I need speed.
Neither are using wireless either, both are wired.

I know nothing about XBox so I can't help you troubleshoot that.

    Go here http://www.wikihow.com/Change-Your-Nat-Type-on-Xbox-Live
and start reading at step 4, 5 and 6.
Step 4 is XBox 360 and step 5 is XBox One so one of those is probably yours.
Then follow through with step 6.

Thanks for the help guys, I guess the issue isn't on my end. This helps as I was considering switching to AT&T cable.
