    Hi

Hope you can help. Seems I've got a few problems and I think it's to do with my router. The router is a 3com Office Connect ADSL Wireless 11g Firewall Router, and is a couple of years old.

I have intermittent connectivity problems, which are usually fixed by disconnecting all the wiring and rebooting the router. However, these have become more frequent recently, with the internet speed very slow or the pc being unable to locate the wireless network.

However, this seems to have manifested itself into a more complex problem. I now can't access certain applications. This is usually fixed by simply rebooting the router, but I'm reluctant to do this as this seems to trigger the problems outlined above.

I've contacted the support desk for one of the applications I can't access, and they've suggested that the router may be on its way out, and that I may need to purchase a new one. They've said before hand to do some stuff though and that's where I'm looking for some advice.

They advised to download the latest firmware for the router. I tried doing this but when I attempt to upgrade through the router website, it comes back with a message "file too big" and doesn't upgrade. Any ideas why?

The support desk have also suggested I "forward the ports" on the wireless router configuration page. I'm not sure how to do this, even though they've provided some generic instructions. If I send some screen shots through, would you be able to point me in the right direction?

I also now have a problem opening internet explorer - it just seems to freeze and doesn't bring up the home page. Suspect if I reboot the server it will fix it but I'm looking for a more permanent solution.

Look forward to hearing from you.

    Thanks

A more permanent solution would be a new modem. I used to have frequent disconnects and stuff, until my ISP told me that my modem was way out of date. The upgrade was free cuz I pay for the rental.

You have provided NO description of your network setup. There's no way to troubleshoot it. You said rebooting server, what server? yahoo.com? The router isn't a server. The computer may be.

my g/f's work was has dsl (i set it up), and i found out later on they were constantly getting disconnected (had to reboot 2-3 times a day or so). i told them how to reboot the router, and modem. i found out they had problems from day 1. well, i called tech support (if you call it that), when i called it failed their online test, they had me reboot the modem that's when they said there was no problem with the modem, if all the lights were green (well, duh i just rebooted the modem). anyway, to make a long story short it turned out to be the modem (after i demanded to talk to a manager, instead of some idiot telling me that the modem was good). i told them the problem was internittent, and when you rebooted, it would work fine for a while.

anyway, is your modem a modem/router? or do you have a modem, and then a router? as mentioned, more info would be helpful. how many comps on your network (wired, or wireless)? what os, etc, etc? - sos
