Router Settings

We've just changed from BT to Talktalk.

Talk talk told us that we can use BT's router no problem at all.

Everything is running fine except for the fact that we can't access certain websites like eBay, paypal, hotmail, yahoo mail etc..

Talktalk have told me that I need to change the MTU from 1500 to 1400. When I do this and try to save it I get the message "Your PPP Username is not correct!"

According To Talktalk this is a setting BT has put on the router so that we can't change the settings and use there equipment with another ISP.

I've been told that I can download and use a patch /Firmware to resolve this problem. I'm not really sure how to go about this or how to do it. Can anyone help advise?

    The router is a 2WIRE BT2700HGV

    Thanks
    Chris

Most firmware updates are a simple download to file - then updating is simply opening the file to run on your computer.
There is usually a read me file, to explain the installation/flash update, so I would download a copy of the read me part , and only open the file when you are coversant with it.
However, as with all firmware, I would make sur you have read the instructions, as it is easy to finish up with a paper weight, if you do not.

Any idea which update I will need and where I find it?

If that site does not help, This site appears to have one to fix it, or the range of BT Voyagers . It makes it thinks its another.
But read through thoroughly before doing anything.

I'd recommend downloading and installing DrTcp to anyone fiddling with Dialup or Broadband settings. DrTcp from http://www.dslreports.com/drtcp
Not available from MG, unfortunately. :cry

Screenprint your settings, using the initial DrTcp settings before you start, so you can go back anytime if you stuff up, or make the wrong choices.
Every time you change settings, screenprint DrTcp settings on the same page as any speedtests you run. That way you will have the 2 results on the same page, for future reference. Reboot after every change of settings to clear any residual cache readings.

    See screenshot for example.:) Bazza

Best advice, by bigbazz - paperweights are too easy to come by.;)

Otherwise you have to use a glider clip into the reset button hole, and start all over again. I've been there.;) Bazza

Wise words bazza but DrTCP will only change the MTU on the PC, not on the router which will have to be done manually.

Hey Bazza- in your attached thumbnail, you have the DrTCP on the right, and on the left you have a guage-lookin' thing and some speeds shown.... what util produces this guage thing and tests your U/L and D/L speeds. I know of some websites like 2Wire and others where they test your speeds, but if there's an app that will do it (and show it like in your thumbnail) I'd love to know where you got it!!! I've seen similar pics used as sigs or avatars on other sites, and I've always wondered where the heck they got it.... I know it's off topic, but I just gotta know!!! ;)

I was blissfully unaware of that.
Can you provide more explanation, or some links to a tutorial, or something?
Changing the MTU certainly changes my results. confused Bazza

Hi Bazza, just go into your router settings and you will find a menu somewhere that will enable you to change your MTU setting.

To get into your router you will need to consult the manual, it will give you an IP address so that you can type it into your browser and (more importantly) a username and password. Once you are in you will be able to browse various settings.........All will become clear.

Here is a link to actually working out your optimum MTU and RWIN. Although DrTCP is a good utility I always prefer to use the manual method.

MTU changes should be effected in the router in my opinion; a) it's easier and b) setting the MTU at router level will also apply those changes to any other pcs inside the LAN / WLAN.

There are also other very good tutorials on this site and maybe it will be of use.
