I have a DL-Link DI-614+ wireless router and there are 3 firmware updates for it, but one of the updates says (Locks the wan port speed to 10 Mbps) Question is do I want or need it locked at 10 Mbps or does it matter?

If you're using the wirless netowrk then yeah go ahead with the update as you probably wont get a hihger speed than 10 Mbps although you might be able to get 11Mbps. I'm not too sure about locking it because it reduces your flexibility but i would go for it. I also have a wireless D-Link 604+ router however i connect to it using a wire so the wirless speed doesnt matter in my case however my dad's laptop uses the wireless and 10Mbps is fine.

Forget everything i said above, i thought u meant the Dl -604+ which is the one i have. U can get speeds up to 22Mbps on your so dont lock it at 10Mbps. You can download version 2.3 instead. Version 2.2 is the update with the 10Mbps lock. You dont need version 2.2 to downlaod 2.3. If ur using a wired network connection then it doesnt matter.

Do NOT upgrade firmware on any D-Link product over a wireless connection.
Failure of the device may result. Use only hard-wired network connections.

ok, first of all, the WAN port isn't going to go faster than 10mbps. Your ISP probably has it limited below that. It shouldn't matter if the WAN port is locked at 10mbps. Second, the DI-614 (rev b anyway) goes 44mbps, but if you don't have a D-Link card in your wireless computer, it only goes 11mbps.

Thanks for the info, one of our computers is wired to the router and the other three are wireless, two of them connect at 22 mbps and the other one at 11mbps so I will hold off on the update for now, and its good to know that it will not slow things down if I do.

as the flea said, the WAN port is what's connected to your DSL/Cable modem. Dlink had some problems with modmes trying to negotiate a port sped that they couldn't use. So the firmware update locked the wan port at 10base. Also, firmware fixes sequential, so the 2.3 version will include all the updates in the 2.2 version.

WAN port is for the internet, not local file transfers between computers.
