I am trying to set up a wireless router (Linksys Wireless-G ADSL Home Gateway (Model No: WAG200G)) using my laptop (Acer Aspire 5920) (OS: MS Windows Vista Home Premium).

I have followed the on screen instructions to letter, to the absolute letter I can assure any one reading this.

Having strictly followed the instructions I keep receiving the same error message which is that the router cannot be detected.

To help anyone who may volunteer to help me with this I want to point out that this laptop "died" some time ago and I have just resurrected it with recovery disks which have just arrived from the manufacturer. So the laptop is like new with the original factory settings. The router is the very first thing that I have tried to install on it. :cry

suggestion throw the router disk away and set it up manually.

I've had issues with the router software. The router software wont do anything but make you want to pull your hair out.

On the bottom the router you should see like Username: Password: and a ip to go to log into the router.

Linksys router access is usually 192.168.1.1 and put ADMIN in the user name, leave password blank.

As pclover stated most times using the provided disc with a router causes more problems vrs making an easy install.

Then run Windows Update to make sure your drivers are up to date especially for your network adapter in the laptop. Check it afterwards in the Device Manager to make sure no problems.

First, forgive me if I use imprecise terminology or if I am asking questions that are so obvious. If I am to set up the router manually I am presuming that I should take the following steps:

    1. Remove the installation software from my laptop.

    2. To carry out the manual set-up I will need the router plugged into the mains and powered up; the DSL cable connected to the router and plugged into the microfilter which is plugged into my phone socket; and, the ethernet cable plugged into the router and my laptop.

Then I type in 192.168.1.1 into the address line of my browser and then type ADMIN in the username and leave password blank. And if you would persevere with me for one more stupid question: does ADMIN have to be in uppercase? (Because I think I have been using lowercase.)

(P.S. Not of interest to anyone but recently have had an accident and on very powerful pain killers which are spacing me out but this does explain my dumb questions as my brain is working at the moment in a way that I would describe as like trying to walk through syrup.)

Sorry I should have been more specific. Yes remove the software and I can't remember offhand about caps or not for admin but if lower case doesn't work then just try upper.

Yes the router has to be powered up and connected to your internet source (DSL or cable) and the computer.

Thanks for that Sam. But the problem is not resolved. I suppose if I am going to get full help I need to go deeper into this problem. This router used to be set up and running fine. Then my ISP changed settings and they sent me a letter with what they called the migration details. They told me to amend these details on my router I would need to physically connect my router to a computer via an ethernet cable. This presented me with two problems. I could not find an ethernet cable connection on my desktop pc and my laptop which had an ethernet cable connection was broken. So I switched back to using my ASDL modem on my desktop pc while my laptop was being repaired. My laptop is now fixed. So this is how come I am trying to set up the router. Because I want to go back wireless. I believe that when I first set up my router in the interest of security I changed the username and password. I cannot remember them. So when I go into 192.168.1.1 I cannot use the standard log in details. I have tried setting the router to factory settings. But it does not seem to have gone back to the factory default settings. I think I tried doing that correctly. I followeed the instructiobs: I pushed a pen into the hole marked restore for 30 seconds then pulled out the power cord and continued to push the restore button for 30 seconds then plugged the power cord back in an d waited and continued to push for 30 seconds. Now, I really dpn'y know what to do.

This is what's known as a hard reset,on a router this sets it back to factory default, the problem with this is your ISP add their own proprietary modifications to the routers so their own custom drivers and software will work with that router "your install disk." the hard reset usually resets the router to a time before these modifications were made turning your install disk into a drinks coaster.

You have two options the first is the easiest, phone your ISP and ask for new router they will send you a new one,the second is harder but if done right can get you going that day, find out the manufacturer of the router and model number and check their website for a driver, this may or may not be there as a lot of routers are not sold to the public but are designed and manufactured specifically for ISP.

What is "mains"? You have a DSL filter on the line connecting your modem to the wall outlet? The filters are not to be used on the line connecting your modem to the wall outlet; they are for your telephones; they filter out DSL signal noise that you will hear when using a telephone on your DSL line without a filter.

"Mains" = "electricity supply", i.e. plugged into a socket to connect to the electricity supply, which powers the router. Perhaps "mains" is not used in American English; I honestly don't know.
