I have a proxy server at work and a router at home. The proxy has a set internal address. The router assigns an address through dhcp and sets the default gateway. If i need to access at work I would set the proxy manually and remove this setting for home. The problem I have is that I can't access the internet through the router now, although everything is working fine. I can ping and tracert no problem and these go through the default gateway. My friend also has this problem. I can't find anything on Microsofts site detailing it.

If you can ping and tracert, and I imagine you are using domain names to ping/trace (e.g. www.msn.com), then you can try flushing your DNS cache. Start->Run->cmd, 'ipconfig /flushdns'. Also be sure to double-check that you have 'use proxy' unchecked in your internet properties.

    Hope this helps,

Sorry no use. It looks to me like IE is holding onto the idea that it should be using the proxy settings, but they are not ticked... I can ping and tracert through dos and it uses the proper gateway.

Hmm, well maybe try installing Firefox or some other browser. If it works ok you can then reinstall ie.

The fact that you can ping/tracert and it uses the correct gateway tells me that it's probably not a problem with a proxy setting. If the proxy somehow stayed enabled while the box was unchecked, your traces would stop at that address. Maybe try some other standard network tests: ping/trace your dns servers, ping your isp's Gateway (found on status page of your router), power cycle your router, disable any software firewalls temporarily.

    Hope this helps,

    Hi there.
I tried firefox. It just throws up the same problem. Absolutely refuses to connect without the proxy settings. Strange Huh. Problem must be somewhere in windows.
