Something has changed and I don't know what. Worked with chaslang on possible malware, he has cleared me. At his suggestion I have uninstalled McAfee, but I still have the problem of not being able to click on links or completing fields on the web by hitting enter or loggin. Running XP w/service Pack 3, Explorer 8, Office 7. Welcome any suggestions.

Kellys Korner has some excellent reg hacks to restore/fix problems like these with XP

    http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

There is one on the right side: Link File Fix for Windows XP
That may be the one to fix this problem for you.
    There may be others there...

if you are comfortable modifying your registry, back up it up first.
Then download the .reg file and double click it to merge it with your registry.

This site is OK, I have used these hacks many, many times.

Thanks for the link, I have backed up the registry to my desktop? Is that good or should I copy to disk? Also, I have heard that a restore point should be made, but I computer will NOT launch restore. Should I be concerned? Thanks in advance for any help, I really appreciate it.

Make two backups, one to disk, one to the desktop. Two backups are better than one. ;) The reason for the backup is in case something goes wrong, you can restore, but I doubt this reg hack is going to do harm, I've used Kelly's Korners reg files hundreds of times...

As to the Restore Point not being created: is it telling you anything? Any mention of services needed, but not running?

Did you run the reg hack? Did it resolve the problem?

Yes I ran the reg hack and no, I still have the problem. It's really strange, there are some links on the net that I can click on and everything works fine, but other things like going to a site, entering my user name and password, hit enter on my keyboard or a "Log In" button on the page and nothing. Restore won't even launch. I'm running XP and have a 7 upgrade that I have been meaning to do, but after reading a bit, find out that I need to back up my files (yes, sadley I do not do that on a regular basis, slap me now) and I don't have the storage means to back them up. I have uninstalled McAfee thinking that it may have had something to do with my issue, but that did not help either. Another interesting thing I noticed is that my home page is Fox news and since the problem has started it will not load and some of the pictures, of places there is suppose to be pictures, had "js" which I am assuming is java script. I don't know enough about java script errors to go that route. I don't know, I am soooo very frustrated.

Hhhhmmm I do not have that setting. When I go to tools, internet options, and select the content tab, I have the following choices, Content Advisor, Certificates, Auto Complete and Feeds and Web Slices. I think it is also worth mentioning that I cannot go to MS windows update site, it just opens a blank page. It has the address in the address bar, but the page is blank.

okay, I surrender, I have downloaded Firefox and have tested some sites and it seems to be working fine. Guess it is a IE8 issue. Have not used FF before, but am willing to try it. Really don't have a choice. Thanks guys!

yea, I tried that already, no help. I just can't figure out what went wrong where. Nuff time wasted trying to figure it out. Firefox is getting the job done. Thanks for your trying!

You might try re-registering the javascript .dll

    With IE9 not open:
Go to the Start button, go to Run and type:

    regsvr32 jscript.dll

press enter, launch IE9. You may have to reload some pages that are in your cache to see the fix.

THAT'S IT! THAT WORKED!!! THANK YOU SO VERY VERY MUCH!!!!
Just to help me understand, was this something that I could have done by mistake. I mean, what caused this to happen? Again, thank you so much!!!!

Possibly it happened on an uninstall of something, not really sure tho.

Glad you're good to go. Keep the Firefox, it is a good practice to have two browsers on a machine in case one goes belly up. Also, some browsers react differently to different web sites, you can also use the alternate browser in those cases as well... ;)
