    Hi,

I'm using a Dell Studio Laptop with Windows Vista on it and for about a 1.5 months have been receiving this error message whenever I try to go to Control Panel/Personalize to brighten my monitor. My Monitor has been kind of dimmed out- it looks like its running on power save mode. Everytime I try to go to Display setting i get this error message :

    Run a legacy CPL elevated
    "C:\windows\system32\RunLegacyCPLElevated.exe"
    Shell32.dll.Control_runDLL desk.CPL,Settings, @Settings

I have tried everything I can and I just can't seem to figure this out. Any help would be Appreciated!!!!

    Thank you!!

    Greetings, janet_jjj...

    Strange symptoms...

Normally, you'd think that the "Elevated" part of the statement would point to some sort of permissions issue, but I don't know that I've seen it expressed in such a way before.

Have you tried uninstalling/reinstalling the video drivers and/or any graphics control panel software that's offered by Dell for your model?

For that matter, here's my standard "more information needed" request:

If you right click the desktop instead of going through the control panel, can you do the changes without seeing that message?
If so, it has something to do with the Nvidia Control Panel software. At least that's what I found when I did some searching. (I'll look at the Speecy report to see what video card you have - before I jump in with a possible solution).

Some laptops (not sure about Dell) have function keys to brighten or dim the display. This fooled me when I bought this one and I took it back thinking it faulty as the display was so dim. Fn + F4 fixed it. Look for a sun or similar icon on the F keys.

@ Caliban Thank you so much for your reply! :

I think I uninstalled-installed video/graphic drivers in the beginning when I started getting this error.

    I have a DELL Studio 1737
Windows Vista Ultimate with Service pack 2
    32 bit operating system

I have attached ghe speccy file.

Let me know if you have any questions

@ plodr : Yes, I did try right clicking but it still gives me the error message

@ Earthling : YAY!! the monitor got brighter! thank you so much for that!! I tried the Fn+the Sun button!!! this solves the monitor brightness!!!! Thank you! :)

@Caliban : The text file was too large to attach so I have compressed it.

    Good morning...

    1. You're running avast!, MSE and PCTools - I think it would be prudent to decide which single antivirus solution that you wish to use and stick with it. Running multiple antivirus programs is known to cause multiple problems.

    2. I'm also seeing traces of Norton - did you once have any Symantec products running on this machine?

    3. There are several startups that I don't recognize - have you tried booting into Safe Mode to see if your symptoms change?

    4. I don't see a Dell Service Tag # - either it's been deleted from the report, or I'm just missing it. Please post your Service Tag # so we can find some driver links for you.

    Edit: good shot, Earthling!

    1. Okay, I'll keep only 1 antivirus. Which is the best to keep?
    2. Yes, the computer came with Norton
    4. How can I find the service tag? is the the Product ID?

    3. Rebooted in Safe mode and clicked on Personalization to get into monitor settings but it doesn't do anything. When in normal mode it pops up a 'run legacy' box. But in safe mode nothing opens up when clicked.
