    Hello all!

simple question but I couldnt get it to work so far:
somebody deleted my "run" command icon from my start menu a while ago, I was wondering if there's a way to get this option back in my start menu?

    thx for any help!
    have a great day,

    Vince

Right-click on the Start button and select properties. Select the Start menu tab and click on the Customize ... button. In the Customize Start Menu window , select the Advanced tab. In the middle are the Start Menu items. Scroll down and put a check in the box next to Run Command.

    thx for the reply guys,

the thing is, the option "run command" is not in the advanced start menu options , next.. when I press windows key + R it states : This operation has been canceled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator.

so I guess the option has been disabled somewhere .. im still looking for a solution and looking around.

This is XP, right? I've never done this, but found it in google. Though I would have thought the afermentioned fixes would work. I have no idea how this would happen without group policy editing. Anyway, here it is, and hope this helps.

    # Edit the following registry key:
HKEY CURRENT USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer. Double click the NoRun entry (or create it as a new REG DWORD value if it doesn't exist). Set the data value to 1. You might need to reboot the computer before the change takes effect.

If that does not work, maybe as a band-aid fix, CTL ALT DLT will bring up task manager, then file, new task (which is that same as run)

    thx Farbib,

it all worked fine ... but my value was already set to "1" , so I tried 0 instead, rebooted and voila!

thx for the help everyone ;)

I just wanted to put this FYI:
a registry value of 1 means YES or Enabled
0 being NO or disabled...since the ....\Policies key lists the access or operating entries that would be in effect AGAINST the applicable user/s, setting a key's value to 0 as you did would mean disabling system block on the related entry....(or you could delete the entry on the right hand side itself which in this scenario would be 'NoRun' entry.

I know it worked but I want more clarification on this Zaar. Can you now go back to that registry entry and see if it's listed as 0 or 1? Thanks.

I'm glad it's fixed and all but that's odd, and makes no sense to me

Farbib, an entry in the HKCU\...\Policies section such as NoRun means, do not show/do not enable the RUN option for the currently logged in user. So a value of 1 would mean NoRun policy is enabled (in effect) and user's privilege to use/see the RUN function is disabled(not allowed).

(if it is under HKLM\...\Policies then it affects the entire system and every user)

Zaar, Are you on a domain? Was this enabled by group policy?

No i just have one local PC ... no domain, no network.
I remember using the run command when I first installed Win XP, then I think my roomate right-clicked and disabled it or something, since then I was looking for a way to get it back.

btw... what turcoloco makes sense to me, im not sure if your trying to figure out the same problem but "0" value would mean a double negative (like don't noRUN.. hehe.. so basically means doRUN) anyway it solved my problem.

    kind regards,
    Vince :)

Aha! (upon further review) I wasn't challenging anyone btw. Just my own being rather green when it comes to manually editing registries. Most of the time when I do it, I don't understand what I'm doing. In this case, I was confused by the word policy, thinking the roomate went into group policy and did it, which led to a line of thinking that confused me. Now it makes sense, and I understand what happened. Thanks.
