Run Me First Question

Hello,

My issue is the same on two Windows servers - one 2008 R2 and one 2016. Is it safe to run all of the programs listed in the Run Me First section on these boxes?

Hi Tim,

They are both application servers, neither hosting a webpage. One is our ERP server, and the other runs a small database for our estimating team. They both have the same problem - cannot run Task Manager. I've tried launching from several different approaches - right-click the task bar, double-click the .exe file, and from Crtl-Alt-Del. The message is "Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file. You may not have appropriate permissions". I've tried it logged on as a few different users, too. I've tried Run As Administrator. I have run Malwarebytes, and it did find the same PUP on both boxes. It "cleaned" it, and the offending registry was deleted. But the problem persisted even though the registry key did not come back, and subsequent Malwarebytes scans are clean. The MB report from that is attached.

 

I'll do that, Tim. But how did that reg key get introduced to those systems?
