"run" on start menu doesn't work

I'm running XP and on the start menu when I click on run nothing happens? I don't have a clue how to fix the problem, and above it are help and search and neither of those work, but I don't care. I really need to use the run feature but I can't, any suggestions?

 

Have you run any registry cleaners or changed any settings or services recently?

Have you checked your PC for Spyware or worms or have you been recently infected?
I suggest you first carry out all the steps in the Spyware Forum to make sure.

Has it worked previously?

If yes, is System Restore an option?

Does it work in Safe Mode?

A quick thing to try is to go to Start, All Programs, Accessories, Command Prompt and type in sfc /scannow

You will need your Windows CD. (Note there is a space after sfc)

 

Do you get an hourglass when you try to use it?

 

it works in safe mode, and i don't get an hour glass. It hasn't worked for the last 6 months this is the first chance i have to address the problem.

 

Go to services.msc from start, run, in Safe Mode.

Disable the SSDP Discovery service.

Reboot and test in normal mode.

 

Assuming off-course that you don't use uPNP devices that require SSDP.

If you are going to disable SSDP, then you should at least set uPNP to manual or disabled if not already.
