Run time error 53?

I have windows xp pro.I am getting an error of 53.I all so can not access REGEDIT!I uninstalled everything that was on my system that my child downloaded.I ran every spyware and anti virus that i have access to ,I even reintalled windows xp.I used clean cache,hijack this,spybot,shredder,norton,ccleaner.I can not get rid of this error run time 53.It pops up after I turn the system on and windows boots up.Please Help anyone!!Also i can get into the regedt32 but not the regedit?

 

Did you try this to access the registry: start > run > type regedit

What does the error message say, other than error runtime 53?

I did not reformat.Just reinstall xp.

 

This error may be coming up cause of some program that is trying to startup on ummm startup. What applications are starting up when you startup your pc?

I'd run msconfig and use Selective startup and uncheck "load startup" items.

Also, you said you could not get into regedit but could get into regedt32, in xp they are the same thing. Can you bring up the cmd prompt? What about explorer? If no in all cases, you may indeed have a virus. Yes, I have read in the first post about running norton.

You should also start by deleting un-used programs that you downloaded.
