My kids play an internet game called runescape and after they been playing for awhile the computer freezes up and I have to do a hard reboot to get things working again.
Has anyone else ever had this problem and what did you do to correct the problem.

I've attached an everest report so that it might save time on questions.

The first thing I would do is get more memory, you are asking allot of only 128 (xp can use 256 but prefers 512 or more) I would also recomend adding a video card, as the one you use now is connected to the mainboard(correct??) and not all that powerful. The issue probably stems from a combo of both the above.

I sure do need more memory. Said 124 of 125 MB being used, on everest report.Said I should update BIOS What does that mean and how do you update.Hope this helps, I believe my problem is memory.

wow I think I know your problem, far too many processes running, norton is a massive resource hog, can you tell me how many processes you have running?

  10. Halbibabe

I'm running 15 processes nine of which deal with Norton.

Halbibabe, you have a lot of things working against you.

Windows ME is probably the one of the buggiest operating systems ever made, combined with fairly old and under-powered hardware.

Getting more memory is certainly an option, as is making sure you are using the latest drivers for all your hardware, and using something less resource-hungry than Norton.

AVAST and AVG are two free antivirus options available from here.

Simple things also like uninstalling unused programs and carrying out a thorough scandisk and defrag may help.

yah I didnt wanna say anything about the ME, ughh I hate that OS, but get rid of norton first RAM is really cheap, but if you don't use it you shouldn't have to spend too much just try the new firewall and antivirus. If you are going to buy a whole new OS IE windows xp your looking at 100+ dollars already plus more ram, your looking at a decent amount of money, there are a few desktops out there that are around 200-300 dollars with higher specs than yours and it's your decision, but look into it good luck tell me how the new programs work. :)

    My first question is:

    1. Is this game an online game?
A If said game is not an online game then try:
    a. Disable any antivirus programs and firewalls.

    Does the game run better?

    B. If said game is an online game:
    a. How much resources does your computer have?
    1. Click, start, control panel (settings, then control panel), then double click System. Next, click on the perfomance tab. (the far right tab). What percentage do you have for System Resources?
