I have an older Dell Inspiron with 2GB of ram and an 80GB hard drive that suddenly turned off and every time I try to turn it back on it says that it was turned of because it was too hot (?) Any ideas? I can't keep it on long enough to put it in safe mode. I found one fan that appeared to be bad and I replaced it but it still doesn't stay on. Help!

If it is running hot and old, perhaps the thermal paste between the CPU and heat sink needs removal and new paste installed.

Also the power supply is probably old. Is the fan in it working?

Two problems found. First the thermal paste was dried out and secondly two of the four heat sink bracket posts are broken. Worse than that they are on the same side. For now I have cleaned the cpu off and put new thermal past on and I then blew the heat sink out real good before re installing it and I installed it with the two good posts on top so the weight will hopefully help till I get my new heat sink and bracket. Thank You All!

A winning combo to clean heatsinks are compressed gas & a paintbrush (less the paint).

If you need that system for an real amount of time you can use cable ties to hold it in place short term (you'll need 3 or 4 connected) it's ghetto , but it will work fine.
