Ok, I thought I'd bring my problem to the software forum since the focus has shifted.

Basically I got a friend to put some large files on an external harddrive, the problem is that he did it with a Mac and I'm on Windows so I can't access the harddrive. See this thread for more info- http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=232353

So now what are my options to get the data off the harddrive? Hook up the hd to a mac and burn the files to disc which I would then put on my computer? Is that possible? Run a virtual Mac on my computer and burn the files to disc and transfer them to my other harddrive? Any other suggestions?

Thanks a bunch for any help!

Have him or you reformat the external as a fat32, and then you can read / write with both mac and pc.

Thanks for the reply, but then the data that's already on there will be lost, won't it? That's what I'm trying to avoid as it costs $11-12 to ship the hd one way and it's already been shipped once so it would have to go another round trip if I wanted him to re-up the files onto it, which would end up being like $30-40 just for shipping. Plus there's a 4gb limit to filesize on fat32 isn't there, is that the size of each file or folder or what? I'm sure a lot of the folders have more than 4gb in them as the whole thing was like 100+gb.

Yeah, thanks a bunch, I was just going to post that someone suggested that on another forum. Another option is HFSExplorer, which I'm using now as I didn't know if there would be any restrictions on the free trial of macdrive and I only need it this once so I didn't want to buy it. Thanks again. :major

four gig is the limit for a single file with fat32, but it remains the easiest way to share files. Next time you will know tho.
