I was looking around at free web hosting sites, and was turned away by the lack of customization, and control. So i decided to take on a new project of running my own server. After some reading i have found it to be free, however i have to register a domain name right? Where would i do that? I also found, to my surprise, that the hardware needed is not very demanding as far as performance is concerned. Currently i have this setup ready to go

    Pentium Celeron 500mhz
    Pentium Mobo
    384MB Ram (Max)
    5GB HDD
    Win2000
    DSL Connection

I should be able to run a small site with this setup for a while until i find something more suitable. Like dual PIII's at 1ghz. and 512GB of ram.

Ok so i have the hardware, and then i have to register a domain name. When im creating the page what language is it going to be coded in? like ASP? HTML? Could i use MS FrontPage to make a site, and then modify the html to my liking? Keep in mind the most time i have spent on something similar to this was a 6 week coarse in school.

So please take a look above, and see if i have everything straight. :)

    Thanks

I've registered many, many URLs through GoDaddy.com (I work for a marketing company; we design and host websites as well). They're inexpensive and easy to deal with. I've also used Network Solutions, though they're more expensive.

Sure. Though if you're really serious about creating a website I'd look into Macromedia's Dreamweaver. Frontpage is not something you want to stick with for long, IMHO.

Also as far as webserver software goes I would recommend apache webserver and mysql and php. Wouldn't touch asp. Also dream weaver rocks!

Thanks for your suggestions. I have looked around and godaddy.com does seem like the cheepest, and many people have positive things to say. :)

Thanks for suggesting Dremweaver. My dads company is acutally giving away extra software that they ordered, and i hope they still have the Dreamweaver program. :) Ill find out tomorrow. How easy is it to use? How simular is it to Frontpage?

Thanks to the both of you.
