When I open the windows task manager I see the applications & processes tabs. I know when I am D/L or installing I should close all running applications. What about the processes ~ what are these? Right now there a 48 processes running. When ( if ever) should I end a process?

    Thanks!!

I closed all of the applications. Should these processes still be running?

What would happen if I ended all of them? Would they just run again when I open programs. Would I be doing harm to close them?

    Sorry not very computer savy...

    Thanks!

Actually, Windows would restart needed processes immediately!!! Usually, Processes that are startet with applications get terminated when you close the application.

Nevertheless, experience tought us, that this is only how things SHOULD happen, but not how they do.

When no applications are running, there should be around 30 processes for OS purposes started.

In fact, 48 seem to be a bit steep. Maybe you can figure out the affiliation of a process to an application by having a look at the process name

e.g.: ati2evxx.exe does belong to my graphics card support
iexplorer.exe is my Internet Explorer that I'm typing in at the moment!

If there is a process that seems to belong to an application that is not running - simply kill it. Windows will restart the service anyway if it is needed!!

Only uncheck applications of which you really KNOW that you don't want them to start on system startup.!!!

Of course you're right .... Windows won'*t let me kill a svchost or something .. but for example smss.exe will restart right after stoping it ... afaik ;)

I ended 4 of the processes but I just wasn't sure what some of the others were so I didn't bother with them. I guess it doesn't matter ~ I am just trying to rid my computer of unnecessary clutter.

    Thanks for your help!!

try looking up your processes here:

    http://www.answersthatwork.com/Tasklist_pages/tasklist.htm

usually they give you a recommendation as to whether or not you can disable the process from running (if it's safe to do or not)

IMiDGeT, I was going to mention another site, www.processlibrary.com but your link is better laid out, less dangerous, and more informative. See the answer for multiple instances of svchost.exe, for example. Thanks. Bazza
