Runs hot

I have a Dell inspiron 5100 laptop, with a pentium4, 2400 MHz, 384 Mb of memory. The problem is that the fan cuts on a lot when I'm running any type of scans, spybot.ad-aware,online games ect. I downloaded CPUCool so I can monitor my temp.

Right now the temp is 48 celsius.When I run scans it goes up to 71-72 celsius
the same with online games. The fan sounds ok,I cleaned out all the ports from dust but nothing helped.

The HDO temp stays in the high 40's. I also have over 150 Mb of free memory,I'm not running that many processes either.
Any help would be appreciated.

Laptops run really hot, and seeing how thats a P4, it runs REALLY hot.

Mine idles at 57c. At load, I can't stand to have it on my lap. Thats with a G4 CPU, that I don't believe normally runs as hot as Intels.

The problem is balancing heat with fan time. The more fan time you have, the less battery. So the fan only cuts on when the temperature gets pretty high.

Also, keep in mind there is a margin of error in the temp sensors as well.

Higher cpu useage=higher temps. Whatever makes the machine work, makes the machine hot. If the machine isn't shutting off, then I'd say its working within its set parameters.

You could also get one of those cooling pads for it.

 

Try googling for dell inspiron heating problem and you will find that you are not alone. Then go to http://www.diefer.de/i8kfan/index.html and download his free utility that lets you adjust the fan speed and temp settings. The bios settings are way too high as shipped. I have an Inspiron 4100 on my lap running at 38 deg C right now and the fans are on and off, high and low. You'd think Dell could do better.
