I posted this on the message board for Spywareblaster and haven't heard a reply yet (maybe I have to wait until the work week?)"I have Windows XP Home and have used Spyware Blaster for months. Have version 3.1 and haven't had any problems. I went into "tools" and "hosts safe" and I have previously done 2 "backups" (last one in May) I thought I'd make another backup so I hit "create new backup" and this message popped up:Run-time error '70'Permission DeniedOKWell -- guess that's not okay. Any suggestions?"Does anyone here know what to do? I searched their message boards and FAQ and couldn't find any answers. Thought maybe someone had a similar problem.

I posted the what's in blue first under Spyware in relation to questions I had re: about:blank (the thread was "I Like about:blank, it is good" but now I've run into problems with what chaslang said to do so I need more help.

He told me to go to:On the runtime error check this out: http://support.microsoft.com/defaul...&NoWebContent=1

which I did and it talks about:HOWTO: Troubleshoot Run-time Error '70' in DCOM Applications

I have Windows XP and as far as I can see this doesn't apply to that. Plus it talks about "the server machine" and I just use dial-up (so I guess it's just my computer). But I ran DCOMCNFG.EXE anyway...but immediately my screen looked differently than it said. I never have done a screen shot -- but I took one -- I just don't know how to post it here -- so it's an attachment.

Do I make this change it's asking me to make?

Can anyone tell me if I'm in the "right place" in my computer and then what to do with these two messages before I go any further.

First, I was just trying to do HOST BACKUPS in Spyware Blaster (like I've done before) but the message came up (see below) with the runtime error. Chaslang was kind enough to point me to the Microsoft info site...it says the info applies to Window 2000, NT, 95,98 and Me -- doesn't say WINDOWS XP which is what I have. Does XP fall under the "NT" category? (I've always been confused by that)

Second: The first directions on that site says to run DCOMCNFG.EXE which I did and then choose the Default properties tab. Well, I don't see anything like that so I click on + for Component services, +computer, +my computer and then when I click the + for DCOM config and get the screen you see below.

Since no one answered for awhile I clicked the no button and then this box showed up:

So does this matter at all? Do I say yes to both? No?

Also - the document talks about the server and client computer but it's just little ole me on a home computer and a dial-up. It is set-up for 3 users but I'm the admin and the only one who goes in and does updates, runs scans, etc.

HELP, I need somebody! Help, not just anybody

Well, before someone suggested I do this, though I didn't think it would matter (because I think the problem lies elsewhere) I uninstalled and reinstalled SpywareBlaster.

    Didn't matter.

OK - so now there's 4 spinning heads on this page and though they're smiling -- I'm not and
YES I AM TALKING TO MYSELF !!
    hello --
    IS ANYONE ELSE OUT THERE.
    I'm feeling very small.

Pegg, not that I'm sure that this is the fix but the link I gave does say XP: I Quote

"If the client computer is running Windows NT, Windows 2000, or Windows XP, follow these steps:

    1. Run DCOM Config (DCOMCNFG.exe).
    2. Click the Default Security tab.
    3. Click the Edit Default button.
    4. Click the Add button.
    5. Click to select the Everyone account, and then click to select Allow Access in the Type of Access box.
    6. Click Ok.
    7. Click Ok again to close the Registry Values Permission dialog box.
    8. Click Ok to close the DCOM Config Properties dialog box.
    9. Test the application again.

The client application successfully handles the event."

    Console Root ???

OK - actually I saw that at the end of the doc. BUT when I run DCOMCNFG.exe I get what I posted at the beginning - and that screen doesn't show any way to "click the Default Security tab" == that's why I went into the "clicking the plus signs" explanation...not knowing what I was doing...until I got to the DCOM + and then it stopped me.

I've gone ahead and said NO to both the boxes that pop up -- but again, I don't see a Default security tab, and Edit Security tab...no tabs. So I'm doing something wrong. I'm in the CONSOLE ROOT -- that doesn't seem right and that's not mentioned anywhere.

    Re: Console Root ???

pegg, I'm afraid I don't have a solution for you, but it's doubtful your problem is related to DCOM. Here are some definitions for DCOM:
    http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&oi=defmore&q=define:DCOM

AFAIK, SpywareBlaster is not a distributed component application. I think the similarity of the error message you're getting to the one in the link Chas posted is purely coincidental.

    Host file

Hmmm - interesting. On SpywareBlaster message boards, so far, the only answer I've received is that no one has an answer but others have had the same problem.

Anyone here had the problem but had the solution?

Ok - if no solution, is Spybot doing enough to "lock the host file" or something else covering that so this backup I'm trying to do can just be ignored and I won't try it again?

    Re: Host file

Definitely use Spybot's 'Lock hosts file' (and the Immunize) features.

Backing up your hosts file is pretty simple, just copy this line and paste into a shortcut and run it whenever:
    copy c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts.txt
It will create 'hosts.txt' in the same folder as your hosts file.

Later when I have some time I'll see if I can find anything on the SpywareBlaster thing.

    Re: Host file

    I didn't find an answer :(
But I did find your thread at Wilders Security :)

Does this happen in Safe Mode?

    Thanks

Hey -- thanks for all your help -- I'll just forget about doing anything with SpywareBlaster since it doesn't really matter then and it seems to be working for everything else.
