Recently began getting runtime errors. CCleaner is telling me that I'm missing VB6KO.DLL file. Might that somehow be related?

    I'm running XP Home Edition v 5.1.2600 SP3
    System type X86

    It has several MS .NET Framework: 1.1, 2.0 SP2, 3.0 SP2, 3.5 SP1; and
    MS Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable,
    MS Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable x86 9.0.30729.17.

Besides how to fix my runtime error, what, if any, of the above-software might I uninstall or might I need to update or reinstall?

Unsure what else you need. I've only recently received this pc from my grandfather.

What function in cCleaner are you using when you receive this error, disk cleaner or registry cleaner?

Is there an error number given with this message?

How long have you been receiving this error? Can you perform a system restore prior to that time?

If no, from a command prompt, type SFC /scannow
Note the space before the /
You may be prompted for the install disk.
Are your updates set to automatic?
What anti virus do you have?:wave:wave:wave:wave

I trust Karen Kenworthy. If you go to her web site
    http://www.karenware.com/powertools/runtimes.asp
and scroll down, you can download the Visual Basic v6 (vbrun60-setup.exe) which would include the missing dll.
I never know what dll download sites are safe, that's why I did not put a link to any of them in my post.

    To answer Plodr,

Thank you for reviewing my posting and for responding.

Was looking for a download like you recommend. And, yes, I, too, have become very discerning.

Given the additional information I gave brandypeppy in previous posting, and my additional questions on the various versions of Basics I have, do you still recommend the download? And, if so, what, if anything, do I uninstall prior to installing v6?

I'm using the registry function for CCleaner. No file, just the registry noted. I have not deleted the registry listing at this time.

Error message is the same but line changes (XXX) and the article that's undefined "ABCD" changes.
    "A Runtime Error has occurred.
    Do you wish to Debug?
    Line: XXX
    Error: 'ABCD' is undefined."

Errors began about the time the pc became infected, which was several weeks and much cleaning up ago (thanks to the great information on the malware removal site, etc.) Note: I asked on the malware removal forum if related; TimW said no.

No install disk. I have a compaq presario with a restore drive so might be possible, but again, I would need help in making that happen since it would be a first for me. As stated above, a lot has changed since that time due to the clean up I did.

Scannow ran without prompting and no errors.

MS Updates is not on automatic, however, I check them at least every other week if not weekly. All critical are up-to-date (according 6to MS updates) with the exception of installing IE8. Had major challeges after IE7 in getting printers, etc. to work again :( so a bit reluctant to jump right in with IE8.

Antivirus that actively runs all the time: Avira AntiVir. That gets updated daily prior to full scan. Even so, infection got through and one of the malware/antivir your guys suggested caught it.

Still unclear about the various .NET versions and Basic versions. Do I need them all? Are they all up-to-date? :confused

Go to your restore partition, I believe you tap the F11 key on boot and you'll be given an option to get there. Or on your boot screen, there may be a message to select an F key, often two choices are given. You'll have to do this until you get to a screen offering a system restore.

YOU WILL loose all data, so be sure to back up anything you need.

You may also be asked for the license key, it is on a label on the lappy, though the last one I did never asked for the key, which makes sense as I was installing from the partition.

Just follow the menus, probably will take just over an hour.

Then go to microsoft and get updates, very important.

Then come here to get your antivirus and spyware programs.

A restore may well be the quickest way to fix up your system. :wave:wave

    Hi

Just to double check is this an error when you use the actual CCLeaner registry app and CCleaner crashes, or is it something the registry scan of CCleaner fines and lists as a missing entry?

The runtime errors are they coming direct from using CCleaner or are they from Internet Explorer and a web surfing a page? (can disable runtime errors in IE by clicking Tools > Internet Options > Advanced tab and then ticking the two optiosn to Disable Script Debugging and close and restart IE)

The two distinctions are crucial as the app crashing is a sign to re-install it, but if its an entry thats listed as missing then delete it as its a missing entry and can be linked to malware thats in the main removed.

Yes to your .NET versions they are all current for your Windows version and they are really needed, you can get away with the lastest version most of the time as its a rollup app, but sadly some applications are porgrammed in a specific .Net version and need files from that version of .Net to work, so best to keep all.

    Hi Halo,

Thanks so much for reviewing my posting and providing me with questions and suggestions. Thanks to all you guys for the service you provide to those of us who are less adept at the workings of the pc.

    To answer your questions:
When CCleaner "scan(s) issues" for registry, it comes up "missing shell dll" for VB6KO.DLL in system32 directory.

Runtime errors show when bringing up different web pages on the net; not with CCleaner. CCleaner is WONDERFUL! Have used it for years. As you suggested, I have ticked off the two you suggested in under the "Advanced" table of internet tools . Will restart IE when I finish this forum. Have already checked out a couple sites that reliably gave me these runtime errors. Looks like it resolved it. Thank you!

Will delete the registry entry through CCleaner. And yes, I did have malware so it just might be left over? Have already worked through the malware removal with TimW prior to this thread and the pc has a "clean bill of health."

Regarding .NET versions. I've recently gotten this pc from my grandfather; I've deleted many applications from it that I don't need. How can I tell which .NET version is being used, if at all, by which application? In other words, how can I be certain that it's still needed? How possible is it that the uninstall didn't remove the related .NET version?

Also, what about the two versions of Basic? Is that the same, that perhaps one version is specific to an application? And if, so, again, how might I determine which applications, if any, are using them.

Any reason you would not support Plodr's suggestion to download and reinstall Basic v6? And if you do feel this is a good idea, should I uninstall the most current version first?

And finally, would you support brandypepper's suggestion to restore? From my standpoint, this sounds like I might be getting into a whole lot of reinstalling and such. But if you guys feel it's best practice to do this, I will "bite the bullet" and do it.
