Hello new to this forum and searched the other threads but not too much help yet, sorry! i left for hawaii 11 days ago and my comp was working up to par. before i left i shut down my comp and turned off the power supply so it would not be affected by a surge or a power outage or virus. now when i try to boot it up before anything i get this error. this is the only screen i get so i cant go into safe mode or any search for the problem at all (it looks as if it were an old dos boot up but i cant type anything to find the error). thanks for the help!

i run an older dell (older as in 4 years old). it is a dimension 9100 w/ 2 Gb ram, i think an ati radeon X2 512 MB vid, and 160 memory HD with 100 GB used if that matters at all. a while back i had a trojan virus windir32 but i got that removed and quarantined if that helps at all as well.

    thanks again!

I'm assuming this is coming up right when you first power up, and it appears in the top left corner... this is the video card POSTing and showing it's chip revision and BIOS release number. If this is ALL you see, and the PC never gets as far as even the Dell logo, then you have some type of hardware problem. First, try pressing F2 repeatedly and see if the PC goes into BIOS. If so, look around and see if the hard drive is recognized correctly, if the RAM is seen correctly, etc. If nothing happens after pressing F2, power down, unplug the power cord, open the case, and start unplugging devices one-by-one (this includes modems, hard drives, optical drives, floppy drive, memory sticks one at a time, etc), and reconnect the power cord and try to power up until the PC gets past where it's getting now. Basically, you swap out parts and remove 'em and through a process of elimination you determine what's causing the hangup. If you have a different video card, or can maybe borrow one from a friend, that would be my first thought.... the idea is to get the PC to continue the start up process. If it starts trying to boot after the hard drive is disconnected, then we know it's at fault, and the same would apply to any of the other devices.... just be sure to power down and unplug the power cord in between each device rotation/removal...
