I've been using the latest version of Avant and I noticed that it literally chews up memory even if I only have 2 tabs open. Rendering is slow and it won't shut down quickly if I've had it open for a long time and it's used quite a bit of RAM by that point.

Curious, has anyone else noticed this?

I like the browser better than MyIE but those few things are just Killing the experience for me.

    win2k pro
    384MB
    p3 733
    yadda yadda..

it's my work machine. Though it does it on my box at home which is a dual p3 733 with 768MB of RAM and win2k server.

Yes, I have mentioned it to the author. Its one downside is huge memory loss. You might try MyIE2, its quite popular, but I have plenty of ram so I dont mind.. I hope the beta trims this back though.

my bad, I am using MyIE2.. i negelected the "2" in my previous post. I like it, but... there's a few things that annoy me.
    Oh well, Thanks MA.

Also mentioned this to the author some versions ago and giving simple steps to reproduce the problem, but it is pretty much ignored.

Now I'm using Mozilla 1.31 with a lot of addons :)

hmm, i havent noticed anything at all with avant. did you guys install plugins for it, or did you already have IE plugins?

maybe i'm just not noticing it because i have plenty of RAM..

i currently have 5 tabs open and have 13.7MB usage from Avant...ooh maybe that is a bit much.

I've been using Avant for a while now. I've tried other browsers, but I keep coming back to this one. Yeah, it uses a lot of memory, but I am willing to sacrifice a little for the extras that it has to offer. I run 192Megs on Celeron 700. Right now I have 80 megs free.
One biggie is the tabbed pages. Another is the middle mouse click (I just love that). The only thing that is missing that IE (and only IE has) is the right click menu on favorites. There are others such as the Tools button. Clear Records, proxy (easily switch proxies), etc.

In my opinion, it is the best one I have encountered. And I've tried every one that is at Majorgeeks.

Not sure which OS you are using but if Win2k/XP and using the taskmanager then select the column "VM Size" which shows all the memory taken also the one paged to disk. I think 13.7 is less than iexplore it self and since it is a shell, then it should at least take more than IE, so the 13.7 is probably the RAM it uses. (I'm in Win98 right now so no process monitor easily at hand)

When I was using it then it easily grapped about 200 Mbyte of memory after a browsing session that lasted an hour. Since with tabs I only needed a single instance of the program for the whole session.(yep it is stable enough)
Also discovered that it created 5 Internet cache sub-folders for some reason, and went beyond the limit I set for 10 Mbyte only, which also annoyed me.

sounds like some girls I know ;)

I have to wait about 3 minutes sometimes before it closes.. I like the program and I would like to recommend it to people because as far as functionality is concerned, it is the best one. But those few things really hold me back from giving it the thumbs up.

I'm using the latest beta now and so far so good.. but I'll keep thumpin' it until I'm absolutely sold that the problem is fixed.

I dunno. I didn't like Avant when I tried it. It seemed like it had a very polished interface (which got in the way, IMO) and nothing special under the hood.

At the moment, I primarily use MyIE2 and Firebird 0.6 (mainly for javascript debugging and HTML compatability). I plan on switching to Mozilla more completely when they finally integrate Mozilla and Firebird sometime in the next six months.

An over-poished interface is a problem, for example, with Windows XP. Every XP user I know installs XP and then makes it look like 2k.

    Also:
    Adaptec EasyCD
    WinAmp 3
    WinZIP

The interfaces are so poished up and "smart" that they get in the way of the work you want to do. Kinda like Clippy in Office 2k. "Get out of my way, I know how to use a computer you stupid thing!".

MyIE2 does everything you list for Avant, and the interface doesn't annoy me.

I moved back to MYIE2. I was testing out the newest release of AVANT and I had it open for about 4 hours. I came back to my machine and I hit refresh and it took damn near 15 seconds to load the page. Then I went to switch tabs and it took about the same time just to switch.. somethings up. No more Avant for me.
