I would like to speed up my computer. It takes several minutes to boot-up and it takes about 15 seconds between pages, even while I am not surfing the web. The computer is forever making that clicking/pinging sound it makes when it is checking for viruses.

Aside from deleting cookies, temp files and history I don't know what to do. I have a million things in my add/delete although I basically run the same programs over and over.

I have a Compaq with Windows XP. Some of the programs seem to be redundant:

ATI Control Panel & ATI Display Driver
Micromedia Flash 8, Flash 8 Video Encoder, Flash Player 8, Flash PlayerPlug-in

There are others I am completely oblivious as to what their purpose is. A few listed are:

    Bonjour
    DB CIF Cam
    High Def Audio Driver
    J25E Runtime Enviornment
    Java Media Framework

I have noticed quite a few of these have very old 'last used' dates. The Micromedia stuff hasnt been used since 06'.

Are there any hard, fast rules to help me determine what is OK to delete. I don't want to screw up my comp..... 90% of the time it is used strictly for work. The other 5% the kids use it for games.

I think I hear the clicking/pinging in my sleep now......(

Bonjour <- Has to do with iTunes but can be safely uninstalled without effecting normal use.
DB CIF Cam <- Your choice http://db-cif-cam.software.informer.com/
High Def Audio Driver <- Keep this
J25E Runtime Enviornment and Java Media Framework <- Way out of date. Should uninstall this and install the newest version Sun Java Runtime Environment 6 Update 12

Then run CCleaner Slim (No Toolbar)

Have you done a disk defrag lately? You can use the built in Windows Defrag or a faster FREE program. Defraggler is very effective and easy to use. Be sure to clean out temp files and restart the computer just before using this. Or for optimum defragging run it in Safe Mode.

Also see here. Basic computer maintenance everyone should do

If none of that works it could be a malware issue. If you think you might have a malware problem then see the READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide

  3. evilfantasy's hitting the nail righ-on. :dancer
If you could include some more info about your computer, that would help.
Processor? How much memory installed? How much disk space are you dedicating for temp files? What AV are you running? Firewall?
Give us a list of all your start up programs, CCleaner will help with that. :strong

I have Presario C: with 5.92 available space and 47.0 total
It also has a Presario_RP D: with 40.7 available space and a total of 47.0

I have McAfee Anti-Virus and firewall. I'm not sure how to determine how much disk space is dedicated to temp files, or how to tell what my start up programs are. :(

Can I remove Bonjour although I use Itunes?

Is CCleaner already installed on my comp or will I need to download it?

I don't think I have much space left, when I defrag it says I need atleast 15% space available and I have about 5%.

    What is Malware?
