I dunno if i posted this in the right place but i got some problems with my comp.

when i turn on the computer, it loads REALLY S....L....O....W. This is what happens: the desktop picture appears. No icons, no taskbar or anything appears only the pic i made as the desktop appears. it stays like that for about 2 or 3 minutes and then the icons and taskbar starts to appear. But for all the icons to appear, it takes about an additional 2 minutes. Sometimes it's faster or slower than that but the point is that it's slow. And sometimes it doesn’t happen.

It started to happen about 2 days after i updated (windows update) the comp. i dunno if it has anything to do with it though. I've checked for viruses, scanned with Ad-aware and cleaned up my comp with CCleaner. doesn't work.

    OS is XP home.
Need any additional info? tell me.

    HELP!!

By update, do you mean SP2?

Try defragging your drive, it will be hellisly fragmented after that...

... so anyone can help me delete all the restore points except the last one? it could be explained in other threads but there r so many of them. i think the restore points may be the problem since i heard i takes a lot of space...

If you want to delete all the restore points, turn off system restore for your drive and restart the computer. Then turn system restore back on again.

(I would only do this if I was happy with the computers performance though, as there will be no option to restore to an earlier time once you have done this. Have you tried restoring to an earlier point as a means to solve your problem?)

in this thread: http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showth...light=sp2+small they tell u to remove all the restore points EXCEPT the last one in a different way. i dun understand though. It says, to resolve the SP2 problem, u must delete the restore points (among other things).

The thing is if i restore to an earlier point, won't the SP2 be gone or something? I like the new features and stuff only thing is that my comp is slow at startup.

This is how you clean up all but the last restore point.

Start > programs> accessories>system tools>disk cleanup ... wait for it to scan for a few seconds. Then another box will pop up BUT it has 2 tabs at the top. Click on the tab in the back that says "MORE OPTIONS" and at the bottom of that box it says "System Restore" and there's a "clean up" button to click on.

I did that BEFORE I installed SP2 in preparation of installation....so maybe you need to do that now because you didn't do that before and there's just too much stuff around.

When SP2 was installed it made a restore point so that should be your "last restore point" so you should be okay (or your computer has made one even since then...) so you should still be okay

my computer boots up very very slow if the network connection is unavailable.

Hey, my network connection is also always (mostly always) unavailable when i start up the comp. maybe that's the problem too....

and pegg, i've made about 2 or 3 restore points since i installed SP2. is dat ok?

I believe so -- you're just trying to clear out the junk that's sitting around that's not needed.

Also, have you looked at what you have "loaded" in you system tray to start up every time you turn on your computer? That can slow things down. A lot of programs shouldn't be running in the background AT ALL -- just open them when you need them.

Hey... i think my comp is good again!! :)
The startup is fast again. i just hope it stays that way. I deleted the restore points and removed the wireless connection thing from the system tray.

    i think it's working.

Thanks everyone! u were all helpful! ;)
