S-video to RCA for laptop

I recently purchased an HP notebook, and it's video card has s-video output. That much is working fine for me, when hooking it up to a television.

What I wanted to try was buying an s-video to rca converter, since my television has rca jacks in the front and it'd just be a much faster process for when I want to watch a television show or something (that i have on my laptop).

So, I went to Radioshack and got a 10.00 converter. Problem is, it won't detect it when I do so. So I'm curious, is this a common problem? I google'd around a bit and found people with similar problems, but it seems none of them were resolved.

The only way to go S-Video to Composite would be to have a hardware device such as this: http://www.tkk.fi/Misc/Electronics/circuits/svideo2cvideo.html

Ok, the > on the left is where the 4 jacks come out, RCA, and S-video.

It runs to a little tiny box, and the E are the 4 female parts, RCA and s-video.

So, I run the S-video male to the laptop, and I have an rca extension that I plug into the yellow rca on the female side (E) .. run that to my television, and yah.

Laptop(s-video) >------[E----------= Television (rca)

Isn't that essentially what you mean?

Sorry for the lame example. It's probably worded horrible and I'll edit it atleast 5 times.

 

It is not a switch box as you think, what I was pointing you at was cable options. Going from S-Video to Composite, you end up with softness in the picture and possible loss.
