Hi im new to overclocking, I brought and built this setup i have now as stated below but the CPU temp seem to be to high for me, I asked a few people and they said that its well known for prescott chips to run hot. My temp is 59 'C on idel and sometimes it goes upto like 70 to 75 on full load is this right ?

I have the default Fan that comes with the retail version of the CPU but i added artic silver 5 gue insted of the pad that comes with the fan and heat sink... any help or answers would make me stop checking my temp every five mins thinking is it going to blow...

    Processer: P4 3.0E prescott @ 3.75 ghz
Mobo: MSI 865PE Neo2 Platinum Edition
Ram: 512 Geil Dual Channel DDR500
    GFX card: Geforce 6600 GT

Liquid, those temps do seem a bit high, prescotts run hot naturally, from what I have found out.
1st question is, is what type of case are you running, and how many fans and what size are they.

    I am running-
    Intel D865perl motherboard 800fsb
    Intel Pent 4, 3.0 Ghz
2 sticks of DDR400 512mb ram with heat sinks
    Nvidia FX 5200 VC
    Ultra 500 watt power supply
2 120mm case fans, one in front one in rear
1 80mm case fan mounted to side of case, in line with cpu
Hard drive cooling fans installed in reader bay inline with memory and cpu
    Temps @ Idle-
    CPU 38C
    Case Temp 29C

    what rob said

and what is the ambient temperature? (load temp) - (case temp) = deltaT, which shouldn't be over 30 degrees or so. if it is, then you'll need to upgrade your cpu cooler for sure before you go for case upgrades. trust me: to lower load temps down 10 degrees, it's much easier to knock deltaT down 10degrees rather than knocking case temp down 10 degrees;) but of course, you may be able to do both:)

just to give you an idea of what my system looks like: p4 2.8E @ 3.5ghz. 45C/38C load/idle and 30C ambient using h2o cooling.

    my system temp is 32 'C :)

I have a cheap tower that was £25 its got a fan on the side that sucks in air, added a fan on the rear that sucks out air because i thought it might help the air flow in there.

But the overclocking does not seem to make any temp difference even when running a stock default the temps are around the same mark.

only thing that might be wrong is i have never put a cpu in before from scratch, meaning that by adding gue and stuff to it... so i might have added to much or to less i dont know,, but it ran at the same temps with the stock gue pad was on, that was on the heat sink in the box when i brought it, thats why i cleaned it off and added artic.

well 2day after my computer rebooting 2 times when playing need for speed underground 2, also checked out the cpu temp on core center and it shows you the highest temp level the cpu has been at from boot, the temp had hit 81'C toasting or what !!!!!

So I thought i would take the cpu out and have another go at putting the artic and heat sink on again, so thats what i did.

The temps now are (47'C - 49'C ideal) and (67'C on full load) 67 still seems abit high but its better than 81'C hey!!! :)

does that seem alot better or is it still to high ?
    :(

i have a 3.2 prescott, and my temps are, idle 40 -45C and max 60 - 64C. So your temps are ok, but could be a little lower, if ur case allowes it get a tube that sucks cool air in from outside of ur case directly to ur cpu. this should get rid of a few degrees. my cpu actually runs cooler with the case closed because of this. but the prescott can run pretty hot before it starts making errors so there isnt too much to worry about, its just easier on the nerves if it runs cool

High Guys Im a newby joined because of some useful info i found. I though I had problems when I installed a new p4 prescot 3g and my idle temp was 50 deg c unload. I now realise I would struggle to get lower my system temp is 29deg c but I have the luxuary of a full pespex case and can adjust to suit. I currently have 1 front fan inlet 3 side inlet 1 top outlet 1 rear outlet and 1 inlet blowinging in on to the back of the motherboard, plus my hard drives are mounted in aluminium heatsings with fans in the 7.5" drive bays all run through a fan controller. I ahve tried 4 different cpu fans and have found no difference, when loaded the cpu reaches 59 has anyone an idea if this is to EXTREME! Oh! only slight over clocking

I have a 3.0 Pressy and its overclocked to 4ghz. With the stock intel h/s and fan it was running at 69*c while running prime95, never had a reboot problem like the other poster but 69*c was overheating it. I believe that intel rates the max temp as 65*C on the presscotts you would have to check. I bought a xp-90 h/s and some AS5 and it dropped the temps to 41*c idle and 49*C at full load

bones thats some overclocking, i tried 3.6 a while ago and just kept blue screening. I have since put the presct under some pressure had ureal tornament plus ran access and a few other prog to see what would happen temp shot up to 65 all it needed was a door and a bing noise and could have used as a microwave. :p

yeah thanks, I never really pushed this chip either, once I hit 4ghz I just stopped and left it. I figured why risk a good thing for a couple 100Mhz...

even 65C is nothing to worry about too much with a p4 prescott, in the beginning mine used to go up to 80C and still no errors... it just made me kinda nervous so i bought a zalman cpu cooler, much better now. anyways, if i remember correctly a prescott can go up to 90C before it gets damaged but in theory it should never get that hot cause it underclocks itself as a safety measure....

here is something from a prescott review:

"Well, we've been running the 3.20E at 100% load (running Distributed Folding - join our top 20 team!) for the past 2-3 weeks or so. Using the same retail heatsink, the 3.20E was sizzling away at a consistent 77-80 degrees! And yes, THAT IS CELSIUS.

It should be noted that in all that time, the Prescott didn't produce so much as a hiccup. But if overall case temperatures are a concern, and you have other components that are sensetive to heat, you should probably consider a higher end thermal solution if going with a Prescott. I think we are going to see a whole new wave of mainstream watercooling solutions riding the Prescott core."

thats fine your p4 will under clock its self (slow its self down) so dont worry it wont blow

Hi guys, got this answer back from intel.

The maximum operating temperature of the Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 processor running at 3E GHz is 69.1 degrees Celsius. As long as the processor is operating under this temperature it is operating within specifications. We recommend setting any thermal alarms about three (3) degrees below the maximum recommended temperature for the processor.

If any one has any details on what is the best heat sink to use could they leave some info. I have been looking at the Gigabyte PCU21-VG 3D-Cooler Pro P4/K7/K8 Cooler Media Kit, or the Zalman Flower CNPS6500B-ALCU, both seem to have good write reviews althought the gigabyte seems to be a bit noisey,

    Any ideas any one

hi i have a p4 3.0 prescott and it never gets hotter than 47c the guy that helped me build it is a computer freak and i discussed the temp problems that i had read about before i ventured to the above processor. he advised me that with proper cooling there would be no problem and that also too many fans can have an adverse affect, he states that too many fans can cause a vacuum effect rather than drawing cool and removing warm. whether this is true or not im no scientist, but i flog my pc with all kinds of stuff it it just ploughs through, no problems. so maybe he's right.
