Safely stopping Exchange Information Store

Good Day All,

We have an Exchange 6.5 install on a Win2K3 server. This keep receiving error 20 in the system log, denoting that update KB832880 is failing to install. Research seems to indicate that stopping the Exchange Information Store on the server, and applying the update manually will resolve the problem. Thing is, I don't know how to do this safely. Therefore, I was hoping that a major geek could help me out. I'm not finding too much on the subject, does anyone have any ideas? Some direction would be much appreciated.
