I was trying to download latest version of Safari for Windows 7 on an HP Pavilion desktop and wasn't watching closely to make certain it was coming from Apple. Before I knew it the home pages of all my browsers were de-activated, were all changed to SafeSear.ch, and I could not restore any of them to the originals. So none of my browsers open with the default homepages I installed on them.

Windows Internet Explorer is the defacto default browser and none of the shortcuts on the desktop or in any folder will start the page they originally referenced. A message window says "Unable to use this Internet Shortcut. The protocol 'http' does not have a registered program."

I've run the recommended diagnostic programs in the "Read me first" thread for Windows 7 users previous to initiating this thread, and I'm attaching the logs for each, with exception of TDSSkiller because it seems to have not put a log on the desktop (and I didn't run it again pending instructions from forum people -- but I will run it again if instructed).

    Attached are the requisite logs.

Thanks in advance for any help in solving this problem of SafeSear.ch hijacked browsers.

    http://img805.imageshack.us/img805/9659/rktigzy.gif Fix items using RogueKiller.

Double-click RogueKiller.exe to run. (Vista/7/8 right-click and select Run as Administrator)
When it opens, press the Scan button
Now click the Registry tab and locate these detections:

    • [PUM.HomePage] (X86) HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main | Start Page : http://www.safesear.ch/?type=20141223-165-ie -> Found
    • [PUM.SearchPage] (X86) HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main | Search Page : http://www.safesear.ch/web/?type=20141223-165-sshome-ie-df&q={searchTerms} -> Found
    • [PUM.SearchPage] (X64) HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-2233769820-2135264113-634507280-1001\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main | Search Page : http://www.safesear.ch/web/?type=20141223-165-sshome-ie-df&q={searchTerms} -> Found

Place a checkmark next to each of these items, leave the others unchecked.
    Now press the Delete button.

...and the same for the entry scheduled tasks tab please...

    • [Suspicious.Path] \Component System\Component -- "C:\Users\Dan\AppData\Local\Component\com.exe" -> Found

When it is finished, there will be a log on your desktop called: RKreport[2].txt
Attach RKreport[2].txt to your next message. (How to attach)
    Reboot the machine.

    What are these?

    • C:\Users\Dan\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Templates\ZLB1AEF.tmp
    • C:\Users\Dan\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Templates\ZLBD844.tmp
    • C:\Users\Dan\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Templates\ZLBFFE1.tmp

Delete what Windows will let you from this folder to be rid of a chunk of temp files:

    C:\Users\Dan\AppData\Local\Temp

http://imageshack.us/a/img841/7292/thisisujrt.gif Please download Junkware Removal Tool to your desktop.
    • Shut down your protection software now to avoid potential conflicts.
    • Run the tool by double-clicking it. If you are using Windows Vista or Seven, right-mouse click it and select Run as Administrator.
    • The tool will open and start scanning your system.
    • Please be patient as this can take a while to complete depending on your system's specifications.
    • On completion, a log (JRT.txt) is saved to your desktop and will automatically open.
    • Attach JRT.txt to your next message.

Please download AdwCleaner by Xplode and save to your Desktop.

    • Double click on AdwCleaner.exe to run the tool.
    • Vista/Windows 7/8 users right-click and select Run As Administrator
    • Click on the Scan button.
    • AdwCleaner will begin...be patient as the scan may take some time to complete.
    • After the scan has finished, click on the Report button...a logfile (AdwCleaner[R#].txt) will open in Notepad for review (where the largest value of # represents the most recent report).
    • The contents of the log file may be confusing. Unless you see a program name that you know should not be removed, don't worry about it. If you see an entry you want to keep, let me know about it.
    • Attach the logfile to your next next reply.
    • A copy of all logfiles are saved in the C:\AdwCleaner folder which was created when running the tool.

Run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. (Right click and run as admin if using Vista, Windows7 or Win8) Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this.
Let me know of any problems you may have encountered with the above instructions and also let me know how things are running!

    Hi Kestrel 13!

Did my best to perform all the operations you asked for. Not much improvement in browser functions, it appears.:( Logs are attached and I attached a (picture in word document) copy of the message generated when starting the computer and logging in just before I came back here.

This is the default page that windows explorer goes to when I open it:

    http://www.safesear.ch/?type=20141223-165-ie-sr

I can get to other web pages by typing or pasting the web addresses or links...that's how I got here.

Hoping the latest logs shed light on what to do next. I really appreciate your willingness to help. Thanks bunches, and I will wait for further instructions.

Additionally, when I click on a link to a web page in an email or on my desktop the response is a windows message box saying :confused

"This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Please install a program or, if one is already installed, create an association in the Default Programs control panel."

I forgot to mention this in my previous post. :wave

I did not have AdwCleaner delete any of the many things it found because I got the impression you want to review the results before doing a deletion. Is that what you wanted? I'm thinking if I run it again and choose to fix these items things will get A LOT better. Right?

YESSSSSS!!!! Things are looking 1000% better!!!!!

Thank you so much for staying with me today. I'm attaching the logs and hoping they are good.

Please let me know if you see anything that still needs to be addressed, especially in the RogueKiller report. I think all the browser items in the ADwCleaner are good.

Once again, Thank you sooooo much for getting me out of this mess today.

Have a Merry Merry Christmas and Happy New year, Kestrel 13!

PS. I will be watching for anything you find that still might be wrong...

    Addendum...

I tried to open a desktop shortcut to this thread and got the attached windows message. Don't know what to do, but I think this is part of the problem we're working on.

    Sorry!!!

    Addendum #2

When I reboot or cold start the computer, I still get the windows message:

"The program can't start because uncdms.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem."

  10. zamorazeke

    zamorazeke Corporal

PS the title/heading on the Windows Message at startup is:

    "WindowsSearch.exe - System Error"

    ...and the actual message reads:

"The program can't start because uncdms.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem."

Thanks again for your patience, Kestrel 13!

    Bless you!

PSS The startup message is the only unresolved issue, I think.

When I made Windows Internet Explorer my default browser that solved the issue of shortcuts/links not being able to start.

    Merry Christmas!!!! :wave

Relates to Windows Desktop Search software, not malware.

I wish you a very Merry Christmas too. :)

You can post about the Windows Desktop Search error in the software forum.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware.
    2. Renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it in step 4 of the READ & RUN ME.
    3. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis. If you don't see it or it will not uninstall, don't worry about it. Just move on to the next step.
    4. If running Vista, Win 7 or Win 8, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    5. Now goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click ( if running Vista, Win7, or Win 8 Right Click and Run As Administrator ) on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    6. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.

    7. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
