WinMX is spyware free.....I used to use that also. Spybot never picked up anything of it being spyware ;)

tried installing the newest version of Limwire, and during the installation process, it wanted to install Java Runtime Environment... i cancelled installation and uninstalled...

I can't remember if Java Runtime Environment was one of the Java products that it was recommended you not use on your computer... can anybody shed some light on whether or not it's a good idea to let this install?

If my beer induced memory serves me well, Limeware REQUIRES java.

The BEST P2P program EVER is the one not installed on your system ;) :D

limewire doesnt come with any spyware it's self. however, everything you download off it does. when you download anything, scan it before you open it, and then scan again after you finished doing whatever you do with it. limewire is the most spy-ware infected p2p i have used. i would recommend ares, but the connection time is like 5-10 minutes for some reason.

you find alot of spyware earl? i have had a completely different experience, and yes i'm up to date with AV and spyware tools... maybe that's because i'm normally only dealing with one particular file format...

I agree with bjgarrick on this one! I've only tried one P2P application and that was an older version of LimeWire while I was still on dialup, so my experience is limited in this. I deleted LimeWire when I found that it was using my computer as a server when I wasn't running the program. Hope this helps. :)

Never had any problem with Limewire at all. I used to use morpheus and that was good for what i wanted it for, and the bundled toolbar/spyware was killed before it ever got in via Spybot and Spysweeper but obvoiously i'd not recommend it to people who are unsure of how to do this.

well, see it all depends on what you're downloading. it it's a movie, and it doesnt come in a folder, and it's a singular file, you don't have much to worry about. however, if you happen to be downloading like a crack or something for a game, alot of those are viruses, same thing with pirating programs (not that i ever have, that's just what i heard ;) ). most the time the virus is just a keylogger some "hacker" made, so it's not that big of deal to get rid of and continue with the use of your original file. i would recommend a bitttorent application, because i have yet to download a file that has a virus on there. spytorrent.com is a good place to go.

You can talk about p2p applications here, but you cannot talk about what you are downloading with them, if its illegal. I'll have to close the thread if it gets any closer to discussion about piracy.

    Thanks.

I'm in the same camp as bj, the only SAFE p2p application is one NOT installed on the system. Though some of the P2P/torrent clients were developed for a legitimate purpose, most were not. A P2P client requires you to establish an open share on your system, and by doing so you leave your system vulnerable.

Yes, I have bittorrent installed on my system, and I use it to download ISO's of Linux Distributions, that's all. After the download is complete I terminate the torrent and close bittorrent.

You should leave it open out of courtesy to the others who are still waiting for the ISO, at least until you have uploaded the same you downloaded. The more people seeding a particular Linux ISO torrent, the faster download speeds for all involved.

It's usually up for 6 hours or more anyway since I run the torrent while I am sleeping. I guess I should check the upload precentage before I terminate the torrent.
