Go to the website of your motherboard manufacturer. They should have instructions on how to update, or flash, your BIOS. It is normaly a rather simple process. However, errors do sometimes happen while flashing which can render your motherboard useless. If you're asking the quesiton of 'How do I flash my BIOS?' then you aren't ready to flash it. I would suggest reading a good deal about the subject before deciding to do it. Educate yourself on the proceedure via searching and reading then decide if it is worth the risk to update, or flash, your BIOS.

well first of all you should work out whether you actually NEED to by going to mobo website, as SwatShark said, and finding out what the update would do in the first place.

If you do need to flash it then the tools to do it are available from the motherboard website.

When you go to the website make sure you have your mobo details with you, things like mobo model etc.

Last time I did it i mucked up my video drivers for some reason, it IS possible to reset the bios to its original state, but involves putting a jumper in place for a while, then taking back out. But this isnt a feature on all mobos.

Just dont do anything you'll regret later!

Actually I will have to disagree with this....
By resetting the CMOS all you are doing is setting the factory defaults for the current installed BIOS... this helps with compatability issues that may have arisen or an over zealous overclock

it WILL NOT revert back to an older BIOS, you can; however, reflash to an older BIOS..

Also, CIZ, understand that what the others are saying is that should something go wrong during the flash, your board becomes a paperweight very fast.

Im sorry but i do have to disagree with you, again!
the bios version is shown as you start up, yes? I have updated the bios, and can see that the bios number changes from one to another. I have problems, then i go for the reset jumper. I see the number change back to my original bios version.
I wrote it down, im pretty sure im right.

Also there is a seperate CMOS reset jumper and a bios restore jumper. cmos reset itsnt the same thing.

Actually not sure its a feature at all any more, all ive ever done it on is an old pII board.

ahhh... I think I know what we are talking about.... some boards, like my Gigabyte, have a Dual Bios,,, one dies and you can revert back to the old one. Is that what we are talking about..
Do all boards have this feature?

    Always want to learn more

I think so, well i dont know.... maybe it is, but all i know that i read the manual and it said "If there is an error flashing, then place jumper bla bla bla in place for 20 seononds, then boot up the machine. You will have the bios version that initally came with your board" etc. etc. etc.

My current board doesnt have this feature, so not all board support it

as a general rule you shouldn't flash unless it fixes a specific isue you have. If you do flash and it goes awry then go to this website
    www.badflash.com
if your mainboard has a removable rom then they can program a new one and send it to you.
