This has been a recurring problem with both the main computer on the network and on my laptop. The actual statement is as follows: Another computer on this network has the same IP address as this computer. Asministrator: More details are available in Windows System event log. Critical error and warning events from all administrative logs.

When this happened on the main computer last night she restored to the previous day and the problem went away, I have noticed that when it happens to me a simple restart fixes the problem.

How do I get into the router to assign IP addresses to each individual device? I believe this would stop the problem altogether. Furthermore, It is not currently a secure network and I would like to make it one. How would I go about this?

If one of you MAJOR geeks would like to help me please let me know and I will fork over my phone number. I appreciate your time and assistance.

The main question is, how are they hooking up to the modem or router? If they are not using a router, and hooking directly up to the modem, yes that can cause problems. Now the big question is, manufacturer & model numbers of all the hardware in question (modem (provider for internet), router if they have one, desktop & laptop).

Once you login to the router you may be able to assign each device on your network an ip based on mac address.

To make your network at home secure just disable SSID broadcasting. You can do that while logged into the router. You should see a something to the effect of 'Show SSID ID" and you want this to be unchecked. Also using WPA2 ecryption for your password will help.

Disabling the SSID does not make you secure. Also, the Router will assign a Dynamic IP if you hit set up that way. Static IPs can also be used, but you need to set the router up for static IP operation. You can use a mix of static & dynamic IPs on a network.
