Please help – I am new to networking and have spent MANY HOURS setting up a “simple” home network, learning as I went. The setup is 2 PCs both running XP, a wired connection using a Belkin router, and an HP Jetdirect print server. Everything runs fine with the second computer – Internet access and printing, but when I try to print with my PC the following message appears TWICE before printing starts:

    INTERNET SHARING CONFIGURATION
C:\WINDOWS\system 32\spoolsv.exe is attempting to change or view this computers Internet Connection Protection Settings. To give permission to edit these settings for as long as the program is open click YES

The options below are “YES” “NO” & “MORE INFORMATION” (which doesn’t respond) plus there is a “tick here not to show this dialogue again” (and ticking this makes no difference either – it always returns). It makes no difference which box I click on – the printing always starts after I have cleared the message for the second time. Ive looked in Internet Tools>Internet Options but I can't see what I need to alter to stop these messages. I’d really appreciate some help with this.

Make sure that the printer's Network drivers are installed on both computers, and it is checked as the default printer.

Thanks, the printer is quite an old one - it's an Epson Stylus Photo 830 and it is set as the default. I have checked the Epson site and got updates of all available drivers downloaded onto both computers, but I am still getting the same on screen message which has to be cleared twice before printing starts.

The server setup appeared to be ok. I downloaded the latest firmware from HP then used the "HP Instal Printer Wizard" and printed off a cofiguration test page which seemed to be alright. The results on these prints showed: "I/O Card Ready", then there were some network statistics:"Total Packets RCVD: 8656 & Total Packets TRANSMITTED:3340" then "DLC/LLC Status: Ready", "TCP/IP Status: Ready", "Appletalk Status: Ready" and finally "SNMP SET CMTY NAME: None" - no mention of any problems.

It is much better to get a Network ready Printer, making a regular printer a printer server with external device is not always a working solution, especially when the server and the printer are from different manufacturers.
