    Yes off-course it will work.

We can't tell you why yours isn't until you tell us exactly what the problem is?

Just telling us it doesn't work doesn't help.

If you wan't to play movies, you have to have software installed like WinDVD or PowerDVD. Reading a data DVD doesn't require any special software - you should be able to see the contents of the disk (even a movie DVD) in Windows Explorer or similar - but not play the movie.

well, whenever i put in any kind of disk, dvd, data, cd-rom, anything....and then say go to my computer to see he contentes of the disk it just freezes up. and the drive makes none of the usual drive noises when its reading a disk. now i had windows xp and it didn't work on that no matter what i tried. but now i've gon back to 2000 so was just wondring if i needed any special drivers or something.

So you're saying that you have never known this drive to work? May be time to pitch it in the junk box...

it hasn't worked since i've had it. this pc was givin to me with windows xp on it. but it came with windows me origonally. and it worked with that version of windows. and when i looked online to find out how to make the drive work with xp i was told it wasn't compatable. but even when i had xp installed it read the drive as a dvd-rom. now that i went back to 2000 it just reads it as a regular cd-rom. this is why i was wondering if i needed any special drivers. i have powerDVD. but the drive still won't read dvds.

No you don't need special drivers.

Windows has native support, meaning it installs any files needed.

To actually play a DVD you need the correct codecs, but the drive should work with CD's etc.
