Samsung laptop screen keeps going blank

I have a samsung R730 laptop with windows 7. I am having problems with the screen. A while back i notices that sometimes when i tuen on the laptop it powers up fine but there is no display. The backlight is coming on but nothing else. The only way to get the display back on is to close the lid to put it on sleep then once it comes back on again it is fine. It also sometimes does this with notifications if a program wants to make a change, after I click on allow, the screen goes blank. It has hardly been doing this recently but I have just installed football manager 2005 computer game and if i have an internet page or another program running while i am playing the game, when i try to go back to the game the page goes blank, and again the only way to get it back is to put it on sleep. I contacted samsung support and they recommended to do a basic recovery which will reinstall all basic windows files and drivers which they said should eliminate the bad software. Is there a better way to eliminate the problem as I don't want to have to go to the hassle of backing everything up and reinstalling all the software if there is a better way. Sorry for the long message I hope I have made myself clear

It's possible that a video driver re-installation will solve your issues. Navigate to this Samsung page, plug in your model number, then download and install the VGA driver package for your machine. Make sure that you reboot after the installation.

Let us know if there are any changes in symptoms.

 

I installed the latest driver but then i realised the link you gave me was for samsung US but i am in UK so i went on the samsung UK website and installed it again. Does it matter that I have installed both, i didn't need to uninstall it did i? Anyway I think it's working ok now. I'll post again if i am having problems. Thanks!

 

It is still happening, thought it was ok as i played the game for a while with no problems but then the screen went blank again

hi any idea what else it could be? The game is in a different screen resolution so when i go back to the desktop the resolution changes and the screen flickers for a second before changing but sometimes the screen stays blank, or the resolution doesn't change so everything appears large on the desktop and I can't get back to the game it won't open

If the driver didn't fix the issue I agree with falconattack, you need to try and plug a external monitor to the system to test. Hooking up the external will let you know if the issue is the the LCD it self or the video gpu. If the issue does persist on the external this issue is the video gpu if not it's the LCD. This could even be a hard drive issue, I've seen crazy things like this happen from failing hardware. Wouldn't hurt to run a hardware diagnostic on your system.

 

When you connect the external screen , don't forget you can enable external monitor by pressing FN + F4 or some F bottom with screen picture :wave

 

yes that is my laptop. I have connected it up to an external monitor and it is working fine. I can go from the game to the desktop no problem and the screen is not jumping it changes straight away. Does this mean that there is a problem with my laptop screen? It always flickers on my laptop. The weird thing is that the screen used to go blank sometimes when i turned the computer on but it hasn't done that for ages. It only seems to be when i am playing this game. Should i do a hardware diagnostic like djdmoney863 suggested. If so how do i do that.

 

just to add, i just now waited until the screen went blank again and connected it up to the external monitor and it was fine, the screen was visible, but blank on the laptop

ok thanks for that. approx how much would a new screen cost? you think it is ok to leave it as it is as its fine most of the time, could it get worse? its only when i play the game
