SAS portable won't run. System security center can't start. W7 - Also, sometimes Google links just go to ads for that subject instead of listed URL.
Tried your malware removal directions and stopped when SAS portable downloads, but won't run.

I have spent a lot of time reading different forum posts on Security Center problem but just didn't know which of the myriad of lengthy procedures to try.

MB works--finds nothing. Have used SAS for years but haven't been able to access it since around when Security Center turned off. don't know if that's the same as MS Security Essentials but, that won't run either.

I think that's about all symptoms.

    Thanks for your help. Paul

Now that I've posted this, I don't know what or where to look for reply. Do I get an email notification? <snipped>

    Welcome to MajorGeeks, ptrue

These links should answer your questions:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Action_Center
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microsoft_Security_Essentials

Go to your "User CP" (Control Panel) > "Edit Options"
    • make sure that in the "Messaging & Notification" you have checked
      • "Receive Email from Administrators"
      • "Instant email notification" is selected in the drop-down menu.

Please attach the requested logs when you are ready.

Thank you Dr. M. for responding. Looking in CP I don't find "Edit Options" or "Messaging & Notification". Also, not clear which 'logs' you are requesting. The actual message I get when attempting to turn on Windows Security Center Service is: " Windows Security Center Service can't be started"

    Thanks for your help, Paul

Also, I have followed directions from other forums threads on this problem to check in services that the right boxes are checked.

You need to attach (See: HOW TO: Attach Items To Your Post ) the below logs created while running the requested scans from the READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide .
    • SASlog.txt log from SuperAntiSpyware.
    • Malwarebytes Anti-Malware log
    • RRlog.txt (from RootRepeal)
    • ComboFix.txt (normally C:\ComboFix.txt)
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
You should attach all of your logs to one message after you have completed all scans.

Downloading Combo Fix, I get a warning that Microsoft Security Essentials is active and I need to disable it for virus and spyware but I don't know how and it doesn't want to run.

Dr. M. -- When there is a Microsoft Security Essentials icon in the tray it is red w/ black X. Disappears when mouse gets close, comes back when I click desktop icon which flashes a red error window for millisec. that says SE isn't monitoring the computer.

So, again, my computer indicates MSE is not working but, ComboFix install says it is and if I don't disable it could harm machine but I can't. Also, SAS is running perhaps because I removed and re-installed it?

Also, Windows update won't...ran troubleshooter. It said it fixed components but, still won't update. Still, WSC service can't be started, (and I'm still brokenhearted), and, Google links are redirected. I have to cut & paste URL.

    Thanks Doc

    Hello, ptrue

*Please move this "C:\Users\508974\Downloads\MGtools (1).exe" directly to your desktop as instructed in the R&R - renaming it properly to "MGtools.exe".

What can you tell me about this scheduled task?
    C:\Windows\tasks\opwahgmcad.job

    Step 1:
*You are out of date with your version of SUPERAntiSpyware.
    • Please uninstall your current version (this is necessary).
    • Then download this SUPERAntiSpyware
    • Install this new version. It may tell you that you need to reboot to complete the installation. You must reboot at this time.
    • After the reboot, run SUPERAntiSpyware and immediately click the Check for Updates button to get more updates for the database.
    • Now run a new "Complete scan" of your system. And attach this new log.

    Step 2:
Uninstall these adware and trackware toolbars-
    Conduit Engine
    Facemoods Toolbar
    GameBox Toolbar
    Elf 1 Toolbar
    Elf_1.13 Toolbar
Java(TM) 6 Update 26 <-- Should have been uninstalled in Step: 3 of the R&R

    Step 3:
Delete all files and subfolders in the below folders except ones from the current date (Windows will not let you delete the files from the current day).
    Step 4:
Now install the latest Sun Java Runtime Environment

    Step 5:
Please follow the instructions in this link: Fixing Google Redirection/hijacking and other redirection problems

    Step 6:
Then run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Windows 7, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

Please attach the below logs to your next reply:
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
    • Goored.txt log
    • MBRCheck.txt log

    * Make sure you tell me if you had any problems running this procedure; and answer this - "What malware problems are you still experiencing?"

    dr.m
