    Hi,

I recently built my first computer from the ground up. The main hard drive is SATA and the mother board is set up for IDE or SATA. I have a couple of IDE hard drives that I would like to intsall for data storage and backup. My question is; is this doable or will this cause a problem? I am open to other ideas and suggestions. Thanks in advance!

    Hi

I don't see an issue. My hard drives are SATA, but my DVD drive is IDE.

I had one SATA drive and one IDE drive and they worked just fin togethere. If you have enough IDE slots, go ahead and use them.

It'll work. When you do it, here are a few tips:

    • Use the SATA for your OS and software; the transfer rate is several times faster than IDE.
    • If the system won't boot properly after adding the IDE drives, you'll have to go into the BIOS setup screen and manually select the main (SATA) drive as the default boot drive.
    • Although I haven't tried video streaming with an IDE drive yet, the slower transfer rate of IDE may cause playback quality issues on higher grade video files. Test this before you transfer a ton of video to an IDE drive.
