Ok here is the ordeal my MOB is a MSI 870A-G54 works well.

What i have setup so far is 2 Sata hard drives one is my main which is 160 gig hard drive which in my opinion you really don't need no more then that for a main unless you are running a crap load of soft ware.Which is unnecessary if you ask me.

I have an 80 gig Sata for extra storage.

I all so have a DVD R.W Drive which is ATA set as master slave.

I want to add an extra Hard Drive that i just got.it is a 320gig drive ATA i just want to use the 320 for a bigger storage drive for my music and videos. My music is taking up a lot of space on my 80gig and yes i listen to it all.

What is the best way to make sure that my system does not crash with the ATA 320 gig and my DVD rom which is ATA.

    DVD is master slave.

And i have the 320gig set to slave.

I know mixing an optical drive and hard drive on the same PATA IDE channel is said to be a no-no . . . though as I recall that usually pertained to the hard drive that had the OS on it. You might have some issues when burning or reading disks by putting both on the same IDE channel (and if I read your motherboard specs correctly it only has one IDE).

You could try it and see if it affects anything. I'd try the optical drive as master and the hard drive as a slave first and check for issues, then switch master/slave and see if that is better. I've never tried it . . . but since the 320GB drive is just for storage I don't think it would effect the operation of the computer overall, since the OS is going to be on a SATA channel. Might be issues if you are transferring files to the harddrive while trying to read a disk. I'd certainly at the first opportunity invest in a SATA optical drive, since you have 6 SATA ports on the board . . . they are pretty cheap anymore.

Not much help, I know. I'm curious to hear how it goes.

I have my HD as slave and my CD rom master the only real time it crash's at all is when i run Speccy to scan for temps.Cd rom plays just fine.

Coming from someone who has heard this and done it anyway, I can tell you that I have never encountered any problems. However, I always make sure to put any IDE/ATA HDD, Optical Drive combo on the same ribbon as

HDD as Master and if possible the connection at the end of the ribbon (ribbon master connection for cable select)
Optical Drive as Slave and if possible the connection before the end (ribbon slave connection for cable select)

Although a couple times, because of the design of the internals of the case, I had to connect them the opposite on the cable, but as long as you have put HDD as master and Optical Drive as slave, I foresee no problems, not even if you want to boot an OS from it!

As I said above, I would recommend the opposite configuration. HDD as Master and Optical as Slave.

So what is the point if the HD is master and CD rom is slave.I only use the HD as backup and saving files.Like i said the only time it crash's is when i use speccy to scan for temps.I know a few things about ata cable system but not much.

Blujay I tried your suggestion and it did not crash when i scanned system with Speccy.

Now with the 80gig ata i had it would crash all the time when i would scan. But with the 320gig it is fine.than you:wave

Not to big on ATA but i find ATA and SATA drives to be about the same in speed.I do not see that much change i think.

I have been dealing with computer for over 15 years and still don't know it all i am good in both software and hardware i may not be good at explaining things but i am much better at just doing it.

A lot of stuff i read up on is 90% is out of date and most of it no longer works.
