Hello everyone, I have been dealing with a lot of frustration on simply finding the necessary drivers in order to install windows xp home on a hard drive. I don't know whether I am blind, but I have searched all over for these drivers.

    Here is my set up.
Computer: HP m7680n Media center edition
    Motherboard: ASUS P5BW-LA
HardDrive that I want to install XP on: Hitachi HD5721 SATA

I have gone to the Hitachi website, HP, and my motherboard website, and I have found no simple download link that will allow me to install the SATA drivers onto a floppy drive so that I can install them from the XP home setup screen when it asks me to press F6 and all that jazz. I have a floppy drive and am fine with just using it in that regard, but does anyone know where I can find these drivers.

this is the link that shows the relevant information for my specific model number, but i am assuming that none of the driver downloads in that link is what is necessary for me to put the sata drivers on a floppy correct?

I would extremely appreciate if anyone can point me in the right direction with this.

    thank you.

    Hello,
Your computer has a Intel P965 chipset therefore you are going to need the mass storage drivers from Intel.

Usually you have to slipstream these drivers into an XP install using nlite as XP does not have built in support for AHCI and your computer does not have a floppy.

Some people have reported success by going into BIOS and setting it to IDE mode instead of AHCI. Then installing the drivers and then setting the BIOS back to AHCI but I cannot guarantee success using this method.

Hey so I just wanted to give you an update. I had a external floppy drive and a slipstreamed Windows XP Home SP2 disk that I used to try to get this to work. I had a breakthrough, but my original question is still largely unresolved. I didn't do the nLite thing because I could just load the drivers onto a floppy disk which i did. Originally I couldn't even see the drive on "My Computer", but because of the your guys' help, I was able to load the drivers by using F6 in the beginning of the boot off the windows CD, and then format the drive allowing me to see it in "My Computer"

However, though I formatted the drive, and could finally see the drive on "My Computer", when I went to try and install the OS through the boot screen, the only way to avoid a blue screen of death was to press F6 immediately, insert the drivers from my floppy, then I selected the drive to install the OS, but for some reason as it was preparing to load the operating system it asked me to insert the drivers again from my floppy drive. Specifically looking for Intel Rapid Storage Technology Drivers, where are the same ones I used when I pressed F6 in the beginning of the process. When I pressed "Enter" to read the floppy drive as asked, nothing would happen, the floppy drive didn't even make a noise that would indicate it is being read. If I try any other option using the boot screen other then the way I told you I get the blue screen of death as the boot screen says "Windows is preparing to enter setup". Off the top of my head, the error is something like: 0x700000B.

The ONLY way I was able to get a windows operating system onto the hard drive was by creating the recovery disks that came with the machine, and installing them that way. I could NOT get my other windows operating system disks to work past formatting because I kept running into the blue screen.

Is this because the computer is this Windows Media center edition, and it creates some sort of driver problem? What if I wanted to install Windows 7 on this new hard drive, would not be possible?

And finally, maybe if I use the nLITE and avoid the whole ordeal where it asks me for those drivers from a floppy drive would solve the problem.

If you are using a USB external floppy drive, it probably will not work as XP only recognizes about 3 external floppy drives at bootup. You can use nlite. It works

Some people were able to mod the textsetup.oem for additional floppy drives but it may or may not work for you.

Edit: you may this guide on using nlite helpful also.

My 10 minutes are up so I am adding this reply. You should not have a problem with Windows 7. Windows 7 has SATA support and if you do need to add a driver during boot, you can either use a CD or USB flash drive to add them during install.
