I have installed a plextor px-810sa dvd drive which is a sata drive. The motherboard is an abit sg-80dc. The os's hardware probe produces this information about the mobo:
The motherboard has two sata ports; the bios reports them as ide channel 3 and ide channel4. I also have a sata hard drive, which works fine as long as I do not plug in the sata dvd. If the sata dvd is plugged in, the pc tries to boot from the dvd reguardless of how the bios boot sequence is set.

Ive done a number of google searched to see what I could find about this problem, but have not found anything about sata dvd's

Does anyone have a clue as to whether or not this problem is solveable?

(the os is linux suse 10.2; but the problems occur even before the grub boot loader enters the picture; so at this point I do not think it is an os problem)

I used to have the same problem with boot sequences. The bios should have a section related to SATA which is usually under "Hard Drives", and allows you to select which one it boots from first. Alternatively, you can just swap the drives. (If the HDD is in SATA#2, move it to #1 and vice versa.) (I have a Samsung SATA DVD Drive at home, so I know it will work. I just have to swap the bios around when I want to boot from my SATA DVD instead of the HDD)

    Thankyou for the reply, but---
I've been all thru the bios looking for anything even loosly related to 'sata' and found nothing.

The sata hard drive works fine as long as the sata dvd is not plugged in.

I have come to the conclusion that either the bios or the motherboard has a bug.

The jumpers on SATA devices are not like on normal ATA devices, i.e they don't set master/slave positions, and normally you don't need to worry about them.

The jumpers are to downgrade the device to SATA 1 speed, and it may be worth trying on yours, to see if it helps

Have you switched the locations where the drives are plugged in yet?
